The first of 3,000 US troops meant to reinforce America’s NATO allies arrived in Eastern Europe Thursday, as photos showed the unloading of US military Strykers and supply trucks at a Polish port.

Photos from the Baltic port city of Gdynia showed dozens of armed US Army M1126 Strykers and Humvees, as well as more than 200 pieces of American military equipment.

Meanwhile, 300 soldiers with the 18th Airborne Corps arrived in Wiesbaden, Germany, Thursday, where they are tasked with establishing a headquarters for upcoming paratrooper deployments, according to the US military’s European Command.

To the east, soldiers with the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing arrived in Poland to prepare an airfield for the arrival of 1,700 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division, Stars and Stripes reported.

A third group of 1,000 soldiers already stationed in Germany with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment will be shifted to Romania, where they will join 900 other US troops.

The Biden administration announced this week it was shifting US forces to reinforce Poland and Romania, NATO members that share a border with Ukraine.

“Collectively, this force is trained and equipped for a variety of missions to deter aggression and to reassure and to defend our allies,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said of the deployments earlier this week. “Not surprisingly, we worked very closely with our Polish and German allies to set the stage for these movements, and we absolutely appreciate their support.”

The deployments come as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to rise, with Moscow having deployed some 100,000 troops along its western border.

American officials accused Russia on Thursday of trying to run a ‘false-flag’ operation to create a pretext for war.

The White House has said it continues to hope for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, however, and has stopped referring to a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine as “imminent”.
