Meghan Mundy spent years commuting from New Jersey to New York City in heels and suits. She had to look the part to dress socialites at her high-end clothing boutique.
Upon relocating to , she observed a more casual sense among the locals, yet a distinctive style was evident.
Munday — who went on to found Fashion Week of Rochester, a series of events that brings designer shows to the area — said she believes the region’s culture introduces a crucial and novel element to the fashion world: inclusivity.
“It makes people feel comfortable and included,” she said.
This year’s Fashion of launched this and continues into Saturday. It takes place at the Dome Arena, 2695 E. Henrietta Road in Henrietta.
Fashion highlights the work of local and national designers for audiences made up of people from and beyond. In its 13th year, the fundraiser sustains The Center for Youth’s mission of providing stable housing to young people vulnerable to and facing homelessness.
“I have big dreams for Rochester, and I think those dreams come alive on the runway,” said Elaine Spaull, Executive Director of The Center for Youth.
The Fashion Week of Rochester models and designers behind the fashion week looks are a mix of professionals and “regular people who love our city so much,” she said. “You will see every shape, every size, every color. When you see that runway tomorrow, you will see Rochester.”
Spaull and Munday said inclusivity forms the heart of the annual event. They both take pride in creating an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome to attend and ensuring attendees will witness a diverse range of body sizes.
“You can’t help but feel connected to the person next to you,” Spaull said.
