How Sodium-Ion Batteries May Challenge Lithium
Lithium-ion batteries are king. They are ubiquitous in everything from consumer electronics to electric vehicles. They are even used to store excess renewable energy. But demand for the critical minerals needed to make lithium-ion batteries is predicted to outstrip supply. That, combined with cost considerations and concerns over energy security are leading companies to consider alternative battery chemistries. One of the most promising is the sodium-ion battery. But there are challenges ahead since sodium batteries are larger and have a lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries.
Chinese battery giant CATL recently announced that it would supply automaker Chery, with sodium-ion batteries for its EVs. Other battery companies like SVOLT and French-based startup, Tiamat, are pursuing similar technology. CNBC spoke to two such companies, California-based Natron Energy and UK-based Faradion, about their plans to commercialize sodium-ion batteries and the technology’s place in the evolving battery market.

Could you use pine or fir as an anode? Biomass would be a big deal.

Well if this is accurate and not just vapor ware, it sounds ideal for home power storage. Who cares if it takes up a whole wall. It’s not going anywhere

According to the Wall Street Journal you can fit at least eight of these cells in series inside of a prison pocket. Fascinating stuff!

Frequency mixed with vibration and the cooling process when making glass salt, allows power transfer and stops batteries blowing up and dendrites.

Unfortunately these products wreak havoc on the environment and human habitat. The brining process to refine these minerals requires millions of natural fresh water pumped from limited wells and streams. We should not be against this but regulations need tighter restrictions and ban countries from exploiting other countries resources.

Lithium cels in Teslas are cylindrical. This means there is a notably large amount of empty space between the cells. By swapping over to square cells you increase the amount of batery capacity by increasing the amount of battery volume. This could counteract the loss due to lower energy density.

Seriously… This is laughable!
Sodium batteries may potentially find some good use in ESS. That is, if China can deliver what they claim.
But not for high-performance EVs.
Atomic # of Sodium 11
Atomic # of Lithium 3
Sodium cathode materials will have to be about 4 times heavier to hold the same amount of charge as Lithium. This is a fundamental fact one can not change thru technological advances. And this is why you should not sleep in your Chenistry classes.

Is it true that sodium-ion batteries can be discharged to zero? My understanding is that lithium ion batteries cannot. Would this not make the USABLE energy of a sodium-ion battery competitive with lithium-ion? Or is this already factored into the stated energy density of sodium-ion batteries?

Why are nowadays American women growling as a bear mostly at the end of their sentences? Or maybe like a lawn mower?
I have read all the critiques of women's vocal mannerisms and tics. No just. No sorry. No uptalk. No vocal fry. I have come to a few simple conclusions, which I have distilled into the following 13 tips.

I have read all the critiques of women's vocal mannerisms and tics. No just. No sorry. No uptalk. No vocal fry. I have come to a few simple conclusions, which I have distilled into the following 13 tips.
1. Never speak in run-on sentences. Use only sentences that Hemingway would use. Speak curtly. Speak of fish and fighting, and the deep wisdom no woman can know. Speak of hills and strong liquor. Speak of Scott Fitzgerald and his fatal weakness.
2. Never let the word just pass your lips. If you find you have used the word just even once, smite mightily about yourself with a mace, lest anyone live to tell the tale and lose you the respect of your colleagues.
3. Never end sentences with a question mark, even when you are asking a question. This may baffle and alarm everyone around you, but better that than the alternative.
4. In fact, avoid questions entirely, lest someone hear you speaking with a rising inflection and take away your place in the workforce. When you wish to ask a question, have a man ask it for you, to save face.
5. Never speak with a rising inflection. If you must speak with any inflection at all, speak with a falling inflection.
6. Do not baby talk, not even to babies. Especially not to babies. Avoid speaking to babies in general, as they do not control the workforce and cannot offer you advancement.
7. Never apologize. Not even once. Not for yourself, and certainly not for America. Never let sorry leave your lips. If you wish to play the board game of that name, point at it and growl.
8. Never creak. You should sooner croak than creak.
9. When you form words at all, which should be but rarely, make certain they come out in a low, gravelly growl, like a hungover Joe Cocker who has gargled shards of glass. Strive to sound like a cigarette would sound if it could talk. Strive to rumble like thunder that has taken a class to counteract its vocal fry. If you sound like the love child of Darth Vader and a female Ent, you have achieved your purpose. Speak so those who hear you wonder aloud and say, "Surely this speaker is a man. Or a grizzly bear who has swallowed a man whole."
10. Most of the time, make no sound at all. Let your actions speak for you. Speak with your fists, never your hands.
11. In general, communicate only by tearing off the arms of those with whom you are displeased. Wave these arms like flags, in a kind of gruff semaphore. To express feelings, roll rocks downhill with rude emoji carved on them.
12. Remember, be confident. You are woman. Hear you roar. It is the only vocalization you can freely make lest you be hounded off the airwaves and out of the workforce.
13. GRRRRR ARRRG. GRRRRRR. RRRRR.

If Sodium Ion batteries for passenger EVs are offered as a lower trim level, why not sell vehicles (targetting first time buyers, or young families) that start as sodium, then upgrade to lithium after a certain number of years or kilometers? It might be a good solution in developing economies where many families have never owned a car before, and college graduates with a salaried job can start to think of acquiring one. And if the needs of the first-time car owner has grown faster than anticipated, they can always trade in for a brand new and more capable vehicle. The pre-owned car will be refurbished and sold with a new Sodium Ion battery at an even lower cost down market, like in smaller and less affluent cities.

What is needed is a battery that can be fast charged and discharged and not cost any more than current lithium batteries, and have a long lifetime. LTO cells do this today, but are like 4x more costly. We need a cheaper LTO cell, that is a game changer.

The idiocy amd pretending of "oh no what do we do about this lack of electricity" is a bit over done. It'd be simple and not very expensive for a company to build a few on demand dynamo plants that can even be run by geothermal power(steam heated inside earth deep under ground) that can then make hundreds of thousand of volts and amps to charge ev's on demand right there at the sight… it just wouldn't make any money at first because of the cost of setting up. But over time it would make billions. The sad delapitated world we live in, full of liars and pretenders.
