How Aurora Got Self-Driving Trucks On The Road
Trucking is an integral part of the economy, representing over 70 percent of freight moved in the United States. Yet it is dogged by driver shortages, safety issues and supply chain challenges. Pittsburgh-based Aurora is hoping to solve these problem and more by bringing self-driving technology to trucks. While other self-driving companies like Starsky Robotics, Embark and TuSimple have folded or scaled back efforts in the U.S., Aurora is moving ahead and is now delivering loads for customers like Uber Freight and Fedex in Texas. CNBC got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at its self-driving operation outside of Dallas to see what a driverless future for trucks could look like.

Lots of comments out here but nobody thinking self driving trucks will make it to the shipper and receiver them a real driver will do the rest think about it and do the math they just trying to put drivers out of work and shutdown truck stop plain and simple

Maybe autonomous trucks will be more common in the future, but we will still need teams of people to maintain and fix them. What's going to happen when a truck breaks down 500 miles from home base?? Somebody is going to have to go out there to fix it or tow it. And, what if road pirates become a thing? Seems like a Fast and Furious scenario, but how will companies protect the cargo if there is no human onboard to guard it? Also, rain, fog, and snow really mess with current autonomous driving systems limiting their use to the sunbelt at least for now.

I don’t see why truckers are the only ones worried about their job. By the time trucking is FULLY automated, perfected and safe. Most other jobs will be automated as well.

Yeah right, pull the other one it has bells on.
They will at best have some prototype testing. As soon as there is 1 truck running into a train or running into another vehicle with severe bodily harm it's dead in the water because while the media forgive Elon for all the harm (even deaths) their FSD has caused, these guys won't get that sweetheart deal.
Who's going to be liable when (not if) it fails?
How are they going to deal with failures in the software, be it accidents, dealing with emergency vehicles, dealing with waterplaning, ice, snow, heavy fog in combination with other vehicles that don't have radar etc ?
Unless you go from pick up area to drop of area instead of from hub to hub where other trucks have to transport it the "final mile"
At least they are not as stupid as Elon who thinks he can do it with a handful of camera's without any other sensors.
By the way, if you need a 'safety' operator behind the wheel… the advantage for robot trucks for not having an actual driver is what exactly? Afterall, the safety operator should still be able and qualified to actual drive the truck there for it's not his problem that you are paying him to babysit the autonomous driving.

These self driving trucks are a con job there is always going to ge failure thus dude with the beard already had a accident testing one of these Aurora trucks it was neet to watch his truck wipe out but glad he made it out alive with his co driver

Screw your ev self driving trucks and Aurora they whats going to happen when driver is asleep and that truck runs off the road or loses control while driver is in sleeper birth sleeping one of these trycks already crashed in driverless mode while the driver was trying to over ride the damn truck it would not let him take control of that truck before it crashed and it was aurora was the company testing this truck and uber had a fatal crash with a car in mesa Arizona where it had killed a pedestrian crossing the street nearest cross walk she was in a very desolate lication no street lights their noght vision camera FAILED AND OT HIT AND KILLED THE PEDESTRIAN inexcusable incident then on ventura freeway 101 a driver was killed by thus type of technology where the camera missread the yellow line and went into a concrete divider killing that driver instantly do not trust this technology

🤔 black ice, cars that pass you to cut you off at an exit, cars that break suddenly, rain, hydroplaning, drunk drivers, sleepy drivers. Are these things being factored in & tested for?

If it runs on electricity, how secure is it against emp. How secure is it against a massive jolt of electricity. Wouldnt I be able to rent or steal a large uhal ridge it generators generators have a wire that I can attach it to a moving truck the other piece would have a magnet so to stick to the truck send a massive amount of electricity to fry the motherboard and other equipment. I take off and I end up having another truck that can pick up the merchandise. Instead of trying to hack the system I can just give it a massive jolt of electricity to fry it.

So can a self driving truck handle a front tire blowout. That is scary. Trucks brake down all the time and sometime need use both lanes to make a turn. I am a trucker and i am against this. Ai cannot handle the conditions we endure every single day on the road. Some of these warebouses were not meant for trucks

Sure it’ll work… till the first major hardware failure comes along causing a catastrophe resulting in a multimillion dollar lawsuit. After a few of those and losing money on a redundant system of all that hardware AND a human you have to pay and insure gets old…. Yeah sure… it’ll work

One month later after that video, Cruise car in SF hit and stop on top of alive victim of "automation". So all of that is just until "technology" fail in the real life with injured people etc. Companies spend millions of dollars to pay engineering teams, train system, and tell about any profit? Instead of low salary of the drivers, they will spend millions in engineers wages. Such a ridiculous "problem" (displacing real drivers) from the beginning…..

It wont drive food or other prices down due to corporate greed and it will cost people their jobs. There are a million things that can go wrong that need the skills of an experienced driver. Techheads only see $ signs, they dont see the affect this will have on humans who make their living driving.
