How Starbucks Was Able To Win Over China

Published

on

A Starbucks opens every nine hours in China. Since the coffee giant opened its first store in China in 1999, it has launched 6,000 stores around the mainly tea-drinking nation and plans to increase its number of stores to 9,000 by 2025. Competitors such as Luckin Coffee and Hey Tea have attempted to outpace Starbucks’ success, however they’ve come up short. Although sales took a hit due to zero-Covid lockdowns, analysts are confident the chain will bounce back with the strong fourth-quarter sales in 2022. How did the Seattle-based coffee giant find such massive success in a country known for its love of tea?

In China, people just go to Starbucks to do homework, talk business, and date. For $4 you can sit for half a day, or talk business is relatively cheap. We all think that people who really like coffee don't go to Starbucks.

Because the Chinese are bougie. They like show-off especially when it comes to wealth and Starbucks markets as upscale and no coffee culture (like Japan). Whereas other Asian countries such as VN / Korea which has a great coffee culture and coffee that is better and cheaper, Starbucks couldn't survive except for the few which caters to Western tourists.

Westerners LOVE to lie and hype up their companies.

Every Chinese citizen KNOWS that Luckin is the number one coffee chain rn.

Stop lying and start bringing FACTS to the table.

Those guards at the Uyghur concentration camps need caffeine for their 24 hour shifts. Torturing Muslims is exhausting, I've heard.

15 years ago, maybe. But nowadays, starbucks is losing its market share in china quickly. There are many other coffee shop options.

Here in China, since most of the cakes and pastries are pre-made else where, freshly delivered to each venue each day, which shielded Starbucks from any food safety problems. Cause if things go wrong, they could just expose whom they are teaming up with, essentially any food issue in Starbucks will be accredited to domestic providers.

But it’s also not like Starbucks doesn’t have any PR issues. As the video pointed , it’s considered to be a status symbol. In the past you get to see news about some barista being rude and insulting to customers who only ordered small cups , or some store expelling elders or public servants like cops , who may not buy anything and just uses the chairs and AC for rest. But these do not happen very often, possibly 2-3 cases every 2 years .

I disagree. Starbucks' outlook in China is bleak, and competitors are still continuously stealing market share from Starbucks. Using Luckin Coffee as an example:
-They have already surpassed Starbucks in store count (9310 vs 6243 as of 23Q1).
-They're opening stores at much faster rate than Starbucks (1 new store every 2 hours vs every 9 hours in 23Q1).
-They're rapidly catching up to Starbucks China in terms of revenue (gap of $2.5bn in 2018, vs $760mn in 2022).
With a poor economic outlook, Chinese consumers are being very cautious with their spending, and they will likely continue to spend less on discretionary products such as coffee. Even if they were to buy freshly brewed coffee, they are more likely to opt for cheaper alternatives such as Luckin over the expensive Starbucks.
