Navigating The E-bike Boom With America’s Outdated Infrastructure

E-bikes are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. and are even outpacing the electric and hybrid car sales. However, they’re also more dangerous than traditional bicycles. While some blame e-bikes’ speed for the increase in injuries, others blame America’s car-centric infrastructure.

Replace a car with a California/Euro restricted 250 watt motor? Dream on. I'm keeping my car.

Just wish US would switch to the Metric System and talk about speed and distances in KM.

It’s also a way for teenagers to learn a healthy respect for speed, without killing somebody. Plus how cool would it be to be a teen and have e-bikes as part of your culture. It’s fun, healthy, and doesn’t have exhaust and death.

More people are killed by cars than are e-bikes… stop the scaremongering.

Much of this video is talking about motorized bicycles, not e-bikes. E-bikes are defined as pedal assisted up to a certain speed, and don't use a throttle.

This video tries to position e-bikes as potentially dangerous, which is not surprising coming out of the US. But consider the danger compared to cars, it's not even close.

I'm sure more people die from falling in the shower than having been hit by an e-bike. Bicycle fatalities are almost always because of cars with the very rare exception.

They don't want people to be self sufficient, rather depend on public transportation etc, yes ebike can be dangerous if not riding it responsible, but isn't that for everything?

Wow thank you for this. I just stumbled on this and been cycling Downtown Houston. But I spend most of it on at Allen parkways- Memorial area. I would enter in downtown and get a coffee or bite. You got to seriously not pay attention to get in an accident.

I teach ebike rider skills and education for city riding, pavement and gravel commuting. Santa Fe NM. Come take a class or two or three. Its a nice pretty city to learn. I'd say that class 1, 2, 3 ebikes are a fast bicycle not a motorcyle by any means. We focus on pedaling and assist, developing that 6th sense, making it your prime ride. Not just sitting there twisting a throttle going 30+, a motorcycle. 20 mph is plenty fast for riding in the city. 28mph if you have to do distance. Love the silence, love the fitness. Wear a helmet for sure in the US. Not counting emopeds or e-motobikes. You know, pegs not pedals. Those things with low seats, heavy, and above 28mph are not in the same catagory as the standard ebike. Ebikes are pretty rad and revolutionary.

One caveat is that ebikes in the Netherlands don't really have many of the benefits of ebikes in North America. They're just as expensive (in part due to the fact that they are heavily regulated), but by being much slower, their value proposition vs car ownership is greatly decreased. Using an ebike in the US means that you get within any destination 5km from your starting point faster than you can in a car, and everywhere else up to three times slower. But an ebike in the Netherlands will always be slower than a car, as it is roughly equivalent in speed to a non-motorized bike. The only benefit that remains is the fact that they allow you to travel without getting sweaty, which is great for commuting.

I started to use my bicycle daily in 1986. At that time it was for fun and sport. In 1991 I became a MTB rider. In 1993 I was using my bicycle to commute going to college (and other places). Since that days I haven't ever left my bicycle again, even when some times I use a business car or truck. As soon as I can I go back to my common way to commute every where I did it. In my third world country and in the place where I need to go around is a hilly car and bus transportation almost every where. Fortunately, there are always parallel empty streets, boulevards center green paths and other kind of paths that cars can't get on and pedestrians are rare.

The basic rules are: design the routes you will need (safe, clean, enjoyable, etc……not short, bicycles solve that problem); avoid cars as much as possible; avoid pedestrians as much as possible; be smart with your speed, it is proper to go very slow between pedestrians, even go following one. Wait until all cars are gone (commonly car packs) and then use the lonely streets.

When designing your route prefer clean air, safe path and empty line even if you have to move 4 km (2.5 mi) away. For a bicycle that's not a significative distance and your life and commute will be improved and prevail.

"Let's limit ebikes speed cause there are more serious injuries when ebikes are involved" now, how many of those accidents are solely ebike riders fault for going at a certain speed? What do they expect ebike riders to do when they have to share lane with cars? Ride at 10mph when cars are passing by at 40mph? That sure sounds super safe! Why not blame the lack of bike lanes and general bike infrasctructure, motor vehicle drivers lack of respect for bikes, safety standarts for ebike manufactures, etc? Sure, let's take the easy route and blame bike and bike riders once again…

  24. @Blight_750

    December 19, 2023 at 6:16 pm

Sometimes Ebikes or not always the issue there are tons of terrible drivers in New York that were actually because of ebike crashes, but everyone just loves to blame the Ebikers and nerfer The car drivers for when they’re driving terrible

Believe me I’ve seen it all, but you can’t just point fingers only at one party without getting the facts

If you take away the Ebikes, you take away peoples actual transportation especially for those that have low income and they’re only transportation for those that only have one E bike

Not to mention, it will ruin food delivery riders to get to their transportation

And what’s going to happen when the police steal your bikers bikes because obviously that they didn’t pay for it and they plan to just take it away from people

So now I wonder how are the food customers going to react when their food stops midway to their house because a officer wants to steal the delivery drivers Ebike ??

  25. @no_name5002

    December 19, 2023 at 6:16 pm

Take lanes away from cars and turn into dedicated ebike lane. Cars are the problem. Not ebikes.

1:00 Can you add the statiatics on how many people died due hit by a person driving a car?
Or how many people died in car collisions?
The issue is not the ebike, but the car traffic. And you should start with that.

4:48 Again, how many millions of people die due to hit by people driving, and nothing is done about that.

8:50 Do you mean that someone with an ebike hit someone walking, and in 80 cases that person died? Or those were car-ebike collisions?

  27. @akita96th

    December 19, 2023 at 6:16 pm

I bet the ebike injuries are far less that those of gun shootings. Guns dont seem to be regulated and if they are they are not enforced. I will take an ebike anyday thank you. Idiots on wheels always get hurt because they are idiots. Cars are dangerous also. Nothing will get you thru life safe from injury. Injury is part of living. PEOPLE get over your endless whining.

It is funny that "motorbike countries" such as Vietnam plan to be a car countries in the future, while "car countries" like US are thinking about being ebike countries 😅. This earth server is weird 😅

    December 19, 2023 at 6:16 pm

Of those 53 Ebike deaths between 2017 and 2021, how many died from being hit by a car or truck???

Bikes are not the danger, but the massive amount of cars and trucks that drives like they just found their license in a cereal box.

Like everything else certain jurisdictions always want to over regulate things people own. E-bikes are the same way, and the people who like doing this like some of the bureaucrats you see in this video aren't the people out on bikes at all, they just want to impose on other people owning them. I think what's missing besides the obvious concept that is the cars always being more of a safety issue than anything else, is that e-bikes shouldn't be made to do only what other bicycles do. That's not why people are buying them. At least other than the very old aren't. They're buying them to do more at times. Being faster with traffic, being able to be safer with traffic, at speeds that are more often the same or closer to what the traffic is doing. I see them as a cross between what someone does with an average conventional scooter and ordinary bicycles. Regulating them to 15 MPH assisting is inane and this chills more people being on two wheels instead of in their cars. That being said I see two areas with them that should be taken more care with in terms of practical use. Old men or old women jumping on e-bikes with decent power who haven't been on any bikes in decades, and teenagers who have instincts and reactions, but little experience with road traffic riding. I see little reason for anyone younger than 18 being on one. This can be a private matter for the parents, but also with advisements from agencies. It doesn't always have to be about iron boot regulations. I will add that for Communist China, they had tons of bike use, especially from the 1970s on, with their "Cultural Revolution" and little to none for private car use, not because of some new progressive thinking, but because they are the communists and people were poor with all the fruits of socialism. That basis isn't like Holland's at all, and it's a bad, bad example therefore.

Yes America trying to ban e-bikes 😂…. Stupid !

    We are very car dependent

    It’s time for change now!

E bikes are much more versatile than cars indeed. Much easier for doing errands , shopping , commute. Even hunters have discovered bike as a mode of utility
