How Fiber Will Speed Up America’s Internet
Fiber connections provide users with very fast, reliable internet. But, only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber internet connection. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that passed in November 2021 promises to bridge this digital divide, with $65 billion dedicated to expanding access to broadband internet to all Americans. Such government support, along with a number of other factors, have caused a spike in the demand for fiber products. CNBC visited Corning, the world’s largest manufacturer of optical fiber and North America’s largest producer of fiber optic cables to understand the technology behind fiber-optic internet and how the market for fiber products is changing.
Fiber-based networks make up the majority of the internet’s backbone. Fiber-optic subsea cables spanning thousands of miles connect continents together, exchanging data at nearly the speed of light. Meanwhile, the massive data centers that host all of our cloud-based applications also rely on fiber connections. Increasingly, these fiber connections are making their way directly into peoples’ homes, providing them with fast, reliable internet. But, only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber internet connection.
“In some instances, particularly in rural areas and very challenging geographies, it can be prohibitively expensive to to deploy fiber and it can be very expensive for households to pay for it,” says Julija Jurkevic, a senior research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Back in 1993 we built heavily massive fiber optics networks in Germans buildings. Then TCP/IP networks came onto them.

the definition of fiber is so stupid and funnny, it's not about how much speed ! you can get 25Mbps also on copper
fiber is a transport type ! the material the cable is made of !

And what the government gives out for free to these companies in a single year is worth more than the entirety of StarLink, which covered the whole world at a tiny fraction of the cost that still has high speeds like fiber. These Fiber companies are just laundering the money back into politicians, they don't actually expand into rural areas, at best, they only expand into newly built towns.

Yeah, rural America is getting shafted again. It's taken 50 years and the attempt is still half-assed, like any rural initiative.

Wifi is still expensive regardless. i know X-finity has been a pain because they don't respond to my request for lowering the price because i make less than what i should be able to get a discount. As if they were doing it intentionally.

In KENYA we have been enjoying fibreoptic internet for years in the major towns and cities… deliverd by SAFARICOM and other providers. Im shocked America lags behind!😮

Optical cables are so cheap and effective it is very strange to see it not prevailing in households in USA. In Russia almost every new deployed cable "for data" is optical since 2012 maybe. Seems so stupid someone still trying to use anything else these days.

Although this report is a year old, there have been some recent developments. Here in GA the state was awarded 1.3 billion of the 65 billion that Biden approved for broadband projects country wide. A bill was passed in GA last year allowing the EMCs (electric companies) to provide internet. In my neighborhood, one of the EMCs partnered with Conexon to have fiber installed to their customers. But where we live our EMC did not, so we weee left out. I contacted my elected officials and my rep at the EMC and Spectrum is now installing fiber to serve my area.

2inch fiber cable runs under my driveway, im in the city for enron, madoff and the ibm pc, yet here in the city limits i cant get it. its not just a rural problem

damn who would have thought that my country is better than the United States in terms of internet speed in general. I visited US way back before fiber internet existed and I was astonished by the internet speed while my country was still stuck on dial up, "man wished I can stay in US," is what I thought, internet is so damn fast. But now it's completely the opposite lol.

The local telco hung a coil of fiber beside the house about 5 years ago. But since we get phone and internet through our cable provider the fiber isn't connected. The telco is just about done fiber rollout for all the major cities in the province and have been moving onto smaller and smaller towns many with populations under 2000.

I'm not American. I got my first fiber optic internet connection about 15 years ago. My first connection had a speed of 1Mbps. My current optical connection speed is 500Mbps and I pay about 25 USD/month for it. I got very suprised watching that news, since, in past, US was the early adopter of every single technology in the world and now you are delayed in comparison with others countries. Americans shall rethink on their politics choices. If not you will lose your relevance in the World.
