He gave the ball back because the attendant that retrieved the throw from the outfielder told him that he (the attendant) was trying to give the ball to the young Brewers fan. When Ian stops and looks down the stairs, he's not responding to the kid crying. That is the point where the attendant is telling him the ball was intended for the younger kid. That's why immediately after Ian gives the ball to the kid you can see the mother thanking the attendant (off camera) for setting things straight.

Not such a completely pure act of generosity. The kid in the red shirt was being directed by the security guard below to give the ball to the other kid. Nice that he did it though.

with all the excitment he didnt notice the other kid at all, and seems like someone pointed it out to him, thats why hes looking to his left and then directly to the kid, and the smile instantly drops, he didnt hesitated and went right to the kid to gift the ball, the scene is so genuine thats why the commentor says they have to give something to him, unlike other videos like this, they went straight to give it, nice touch but planned
