It isn’t the first time a camera has been hit, even one time going through the camera hole directly. But this is the first time a camera has been hit inside the area of play.

Speaking from experience those lenses can cost like $5,000 to $7,000 depending on the brand and quality pretty pricey mishap

As a photographer, you might live and learn but you learn first and foremost to protect your gear and your limits to avoid stuff like this… unless you have no budget Telephoto lenses aren’t cheap. If the lens hood flew off at that speed and what looks like the filter the front elements might be dented or fractured enough to need to be replaced as repairs could be about as costly and everything will need realigned if the lens body was hit at all. The lens hood looked split at the least.
I’ve never photographed a hockey game (nor been to one yet) but you also don’t input your gear into the rink to interfere with the game. The windows are there to allow you to photograph/film without obstruction, not to be an obstruction. Geesh. At least it’s not a umpteen grand Nikkor treasure.
