I broke my left radius in half, required rods, pins, and screws in my arm. I was absolutely TERRIFIED of general anesthesia to the point of a panic attack on the day of surgery. It's the lack of being in control, the thought of slipping away into oblivion forever, unconscious, that scared me. During general anesthesia they paralyze you, you are on a ventilator and have a breathing tube. It's not just drifting off for a bit. SO, I explained my anxiety to my anesthesiologist and he told me I could stay awake, that I was the one in control of what happened to me, and I had a wonderful experience!!! I got a left arm nerve block at the shoulder and he gave me some kind of medication to calm me that also reduced pain while keeping me conscious. I remember the entire surgery. During the last 5 minutes I felt the pain of the tourniquet on my arm, squeezing it hard to stop the blood flowing to the arm during the procedure. I think it was because he dropped the dose of the "relaxing, pain reducing" medication since the surgery was almost over. I was telling him how bad the tourniquet hurt but he told me to hang on a minute because the doctor was just finishing stitching me up. It was fine and they released the tourniquet and the pain went away. I couldn't feel my arm for 2 days because of the nerve block. I guess the pain from the tourniquet somehow gets through a bit. I would fully recommend awake surgery for anyone who is fearful of general anesthesia like I was. Don't allow fear of anesthesia to stop you getting surgery because a ton of procedures can be done while you are awake now. I am SO glad that my anesthesiologist listened to me, took my fears into consideration, kept me awake and relaxed and provided me the absolute best experience I could have had.

I would have LOVED to be awake (and numbed of course) during my diaphragmatic hernia repair surgeries. The closest I got was having the surgeon take pictures of what he was doing and show me afterwards. I’ll get to see lots of cool stuff as a cardiac ultrasound tech next year.

I would like to say one thing, I hate when surgeons do that, he started becoming rude and hypocritical when she said owie. It's her fkn body don't tell her what she feels and what she don't feel. Nothing worst then feeling all alone under the knife when u feel cornered and that nobody has your back. Even if a patient exegerrates her pain it's her body responding to a prior experience and it's perfectly normal, that's why she should be sleep goofy. He was entirely rude to her and my perspective about him has changed. He will forever be the doctor who treated his patient rudely. That's for life.

I would've wanted to be awake too because when you're asleep, you get NO relief. You're unconscious so you dont get to experience the peace of anesthesia. Most people wake up calmly from surgery. She doesn't. It's just 2 hours of sheer panic anticipating the anesthisia followed by 2-4 hours of panic when you wake up. Panick attacks before and after surgery is just nonstop terror. BUT if you're awake, you're anxiousness doesn't get to take over because going under is what triggers the attack. Not the surgery. She can't see it or feel pain. So she gets to, like he said, be in control and ride it out. And the best part is, when she's done, her body won't freak out and cause her to feel like she's being chased by a serial killer. That's the best why I can explain it.

No anesthesia because of anxiety? So she would prefer to be cut open as she is conscious instead of falling asleep? I feel like that would be scary and cause much more anxiety… 😅

The thought of being put to sleep with the thought of knowing these people are about to be digging in you is terrifying and how long will you sleep?

I'm in shock that it was even an option to be awake during surgery!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe that would be better for someone with anxiety. I went to have my wisdom teeth removed and the nurse couldn't get an IV going in me (I know you aren't completely asleep for this but it produces a similar effect) and the nurse asked if I wanted to do it awake, but the surgeon wasn't willing! (Not 100% sure it was because I already have anxiety, but it sounded like it was).

Yea I’d rather be asleep, NAH SHE BRAVE

Being AWAKE would cause far more of a panic attack than being asleep!!! Just give her Ativan before and after. Thus isn't even needed surgery, it's just vanity.

Wish I could afford a new belly button and flab removal. I was born with an umbilical hernia that ruptured when i was 6 weeks old. I have a 6-8" inch scar under my belly button, that makes the belly button pucker over. It looks awful and often smells as the scar stays raw.

Some people that say that being awake is worse Don’t realize it because they’ve never done a procedure that way. I have done two molar removals under local anesthesia and yes I felt the pressure but let me tell you something it is much better doing it that way.
I would have a panic attack of being put under because it is something that you do not have control of for a temporary time and all you depend on is someone else to give you oxygen and monitor your levels and that to me is a lot scarier than numbing a part of your body.
