The Future Of The Aircraft Carrier

Published

on

Expensive, massive and lethal, the aircraft carrier has been the cornerstone of American security for close to a century, but with advances in missile design, will it remain on top?

Aircraft carriers are expensive. The latest carrier in the U.S. Navy, part of what’s called the Ford class, costs $12.8 billion per ship, and that’s before the cost of fixing new technology, aircraft flying off the deck and the cost of operating the carrier in the high seas for months at a time. The U.S. has more active aircraft carriers than every other country in the world combined. The U.S. Navy currently has ten Nimitz-class carriers, one Ford-class carrier and nine amphibious assault ships, which are smaller and focus on helicopters and short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft. A Nimitz-class carrier can carry a mix of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, E-2D Hawkeye surveillance aircraft and an assortment of other support aircraft and helicopters. The carrier fighter of the future is the F-35C. But to field the new aircraft, most U.S. carriers will need to be upgraded.

The ONLY THING that's gonna STOP DEFENSE SPENDING when it comes to the U.S. NAVY. Is somehow that the technology that DR STEPHEN GREER, OR THE very BRILLIANT LATE Lt Colonel BEARDEN'S INSIGHT COMES TO FRUITION. "RIGHT F*CKIN" NOW. But..if.the RELEASE, of the technology goes OPEN SOURCE. A terrorist could USE THAT TECHNOLOGY, for nefarious reasons. In closing,,,, THERE is a WAY TO RENDER FOSSIL FUEL PROPELLED CRAFT USELESS.

Just big targets for enemies missiles! Stop wasting money! The only thing we should be building are submarines and offensive and defensive missiles to include road mobile ICBMs

We are going to always need some kinda aircraft carrier. But the battleship . With today technology. There not a ship on the water that could touch it and fire power omg you could level a country!

For there might remain military training to some percent of population but war industries will go away with development of marxist economics,if it is applied in new world order and this time creating both sides development of accumulation hardly makes sense as marx was just able to warn machinery will undermine human labour but time has come

Ships are now sitting ducks as missile technology improves. Unless there’s proven anti missile systems, all it takes is one monster to destroy the whole Concept of war ships.

We can't really know how effective our new Ford-class A/C will be against a potential enemy unless we actually fight each other. Hopefully that won't happen. But if so, we might wind up learning that our "biggest warship in the world" is vulnerable to a hypersonic "carrier-killer" missile like China's DF-21. These missiles only cost $10 million each. 1,000 of them cost less than the Ford. And they don't risk the lives of Chinese sailors. There are 2,600 on the Ford.

Very recently a US "amphibious" assault carrier demonstrated its ability to launch 24 F-35Bs. That platform all of a sudden became a major offensive center for the US Navy.

The future of large aircraft carriers are in question due to hypersonic anti ship missiles of USA adversaries

  16. @ramonng6381

    January 9, 2024 at 12:40 pm

Carriers used to be awesome, as were submarines, but with the hypersonic gliders, they are now, practically, useless…

China developed so fast, it bypassed the submarine and carrier stages….went directly to space control and hyper territory…

  17. @ramonng6381

    January 9, 2024 at 12:40 pm

Nothing but a big boat now…..with hypersonic missiles and gliders, might as well be stationary sitting ducks….a money drain, that is all….

China is taking a step by step methods in building aircraft carriers. They didn't know how to properly build one, so they bought an old one from Ukraine and learnt from it, putting it into service in the process. Once they got the know-how, they built and improved copy. Now they're building a third with EMALS but still conventionally powered, simmilar to the IEP propulsion that powers the Zummwalt destroyers. The fourth would probably the first design to feature a nuclear propulsion.

Amazing how many important points you missed or glossed over. Here are a few:
What is the cost of not having carriers? …
    What is the alternative? …
Current hot zones are Taiwan/South China Sea (7000 to 10,000 miles from US), East China Sea (6500 miles), Yellow Sea (6000 miles), Sea of Japan (5500 miles) …
Carrier battle groups can station within immediate striking distance of any of these …
Aircraft carriers are sovereign US territory wherever they go. They do not require a foreign government's permission to operate …
America's economy is based on foreign trade, which requires open seas which are enforced by US carrier battle groups …
Wasp/America class carriers cannot dominate an area like a full-size carrier …
Carriers have multiple layers of defense extending out hundreds of miles from the center of the battle group in all directions …
Carriers can move. Land installation like the islands China built in international waters cannot …
Carriers can exit the active battle zone to resupply. Island bases cannot …
Money spent on carriers is not the same as a pile of cash left on the corner. It drives technology advancement. It employs shipbuilders, contractors and the communities that support them. It pays, trains, promotes competent sailors and officers to always ensure battle readiness …
Yes, top of the line modern carriers are expensive …
Yes, there are delays and reworks when developing new systems
Yes, like every military procurement ever there are cost overruns
AND YES, THE COST OF NOT HAVING THEM FAR OUTWEIGHS THE COST OF HAVING THEM

us military budget is so low! compared to the population it monitors! America need to be abroad! we are no longer living in the bronze age… the weapon are so destructive! we have no choice but to watch and be vigilant!

As a defense contractor, the future is we will keep getting paid and those ships will kept on floating and showing off!

Carriers are relics. Their days are over. Been saying this for a long time.
Cruise missiles designed to hunt and sink carriers have come a long way.
Against a real military or Navy they will hit bottom quick.
