French President Emmanuel Macron will lobby his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this week to try to avert tariffs on dairy and pork exports to China.

France has resolved some outstanding trade disagreements with China, including on Cognac, according to a French official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. But tariffs on dairy and pork are still at risk and will be a focus of French discussions in China.

Beijing is weighing the duties as possible retaliation for the European Union’s decision last year to impose tariffs as high as 45% on Chinese-made electric vehicles, a move that was backed by Paris. French agriculture exports to China have dropped by around 20% to €3 billion, according to the French Treasury.
