99 will always be regarded as the greatest hockey player to ever live. But did he have the greatest single season in NHL history? Hear this out: Even though Gretzky had a few 200 pt seasons, it was actually Mario's 199 pt in 76 games that many consider to be the greatest individual season in NHL history. Hear the argument out: Mario missed a handful of games preventing him from getting that 1 point needed to join the 200 club. Not only that, but that season the refs were under fire for being too lenient on superstar players. Mario was penalized for 100 minutes! Give Mario 100 minutes back (heck, even 50 min) and he's bound to get at least 15 points. Lastly, that season 66 scored a monster 13 shorthanded goals! THIRTEEN! He was so dominant that he was even a threat while the other team had an extra attacker. Gretzky is the greatest of all time. No argument there. But Mario had the most dominate season of all time. Bonus fact: 88/89 was also the season in which Mario scored 5 goals in all 5 different ways 😉

Man 80s were wild, no helmets, small goalie pads, wooden sticks and a lot of moustaches 😁 anyway i’d put Stastny higher, he was 2nd in points after gretzky in the 80', if im not wrong.

Just look on this poor goalie equipment & dumb brutal defs.. wood sticks, outdate training, 2 line pass – all this wouldn’t have stopped players like Ovi or McDavid from scoring 1000 goals or 3,000 points at that time
