While China’s influence is on the upswing, American influence has been waning. “The United States simply is not as powerful as it once was,” former NSC Senior Director Mira Rapp-Hooper tells Ali Velshi, noting that part of the blame rests on Donald Trump’s hardline policies like his so-called “Liberation Day tariffs.” Former Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy Richard Stengel says, “They used to say America was the leader of the free world, but the free world is receding…This predates President Trump, certainly, but he is absolutely an accelerant of it.”
