GOP Efforts To Ban CRT Mimic Authoritarian ‘Memory Laws’ Says Historian

Published

on

GOP efforts to ban critical race theory, anti-racism education, and other efforts to evade America’s racist history are similar to the enactment of ‘memory laws’ in authoritarian states such as Russia, historian Timothy Snyder tells Joy Reid.

There is no banning the history of this country lol. Them trying to do so is only making people want to seek it out more. These people don’t really think ahead just in the moment to deceive. The truth always comes out. And a reckoning for the evil will come.

Unbelievable. CRT is NOT history. "Safe spaces" were made for liberal snowflakes who were sad when Trump was president. Or when the Trump supporter got canceled and pepper-sprayed in the face at UC Berkeley because this guy support Trump, a man they didn't like.

CRT bans do NOT keep people from teaching about Jim Crow laws. It is a fundamentally ideological inaccurate viewpoint that paints people as oppressed or oppressors solely based upon their skin color. It focuses solely on the color of someone's skin and not on the content of their character….. It is diabolically opposed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" in which he told us to focus on someone's character and NOT on their race. This is inaccurate and poor journalism at best. At worst it is a straight up lie told from a liberal perspective/ worldview that is contrary to Christian biblical principles and the Judeo-Christian principles that our country was founded upon.

China is so glad we get caught up fighting stupid ideas like CRT, instead of worrying about the Taliban.

I am not trying to change anyone's minds. Liberal viewpoints are just that, different viewpoints than conservative ones. And in my viewpoint, I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I would say evangelical Christian but that term has been hijacked and means so many things to different people that I couldn't even begin to address all those issues. People with different worldviews see the same idea and arrive at fundamentally different conclusions. Tolerance by definition essentially means agreeing to disagree. Why can't we just agree to disagree? Why do I have to affirm your difference of opinion or viewpoint? What if my viewpoint doesn't allow me to affirm or celebrate your differing viewpoint? Should I be force to capitulate or face consequences?

Love 💘this. The republicants are trying so hard right now to change history. And our past nomatter how uncomfortable has to be told. To deny the very tragic death and slavery of our Americans in the past has to be told in school. I would have wanted my children to learn all truths of How the 🇺🇸WAS MADE. AND WANT GRANDCHILDREN TO BE TAUGHT. I've talked to my grandchildren and they agree no matter how uncomfortable they want the truth. Can't believe I just said that. The only thing would be uncomfortable. Well with some people it would mean drastically changing things in America. The one truth is change will happen its a fact 💯👌and change in life is needed,it's shameful many things have stayed the same. Voting rights are being taken everyday.

ATLANTA, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) — Members of the Georgia Board of Education voted 11-2 to pass a resolution, joining several State school systems looking to ban teaching on Critical Race Theory This is in response to Governor Brian Kemp’s letter urging the board to ban Critical Race Theory in Georgia’s curriculums.
Democrat Leftist board members Leonte Benton and Kenneth Mason voted against banning Critical Race Theory. Those supporting the resolution say Critical Race Theory is divisive. The Board of Education said “We will continue to respect equality". That means treating people like you’d like to be treated,” said Republican Board Member Helen Rice.
Governor Brian P. Kemp applauded members of the State Board of Education that voted to express their opposition to teaching Critical Race Theory (CRT) in Georgia’s K-12 classrooms. The board moved quickly after a letter from Governor Kemp in May urging swift action before the beginning of this school year.
I applaud the members of the State Board of Education for making it clear this dangerous, anti-American ideology that has no place in Georgia classrooms,” said Gov. Kemp. “With this resolution the state school board members have ensured education in the Peach State will reflect the freedom, equality, and God-given potential of each individual.
The State Board of Education took action regarding Critical Race Theory in Georgia’s public schools,” said State School Superintendent Richard Woods. Georgia's commitment is to continue uniting communities, people and families. To stop Leftist educators from pushing destructive unproven theories on our students as we responsible Conservative educators ensure that every child, from every zip code, will receive a great education and have the ability to access and gain opportunities to accomplish anything.

They are not concerned about the effects of racism and the damage it does to people. Stopping the teaching of history from the view of others is something we should all be fighting to support. It feels like nazi ideology banning anything that does not support their thinking.

Surely the equality laws of the US, means that black people can do the same thing, by saying that the history which is taught without the truth in it, is making them feel bad too, because they are feeling guilty that their country is removing one of the most important parts of US history………
And, if they are ignored, then the people who ignore this are guilty of breaking their own laws, and so the teachers can be denounced for making them feel bad, because their history is being censored, just because of the colour of the people involved, which is then obviously two different offences, isn’t it.?.?.?.?.?,

CRT isolates and scrutinizes one skin color from all the others. It's racist in nature and should be banned. No matter what lies the Dems choose to spew on the topic.

Just finished reading Dr Snyder's NYT essay. Thank you so much.

  32. @canteluna

    December 11, 2023 at 3:43 pm

I am always very interested in anything Professor Snyder has to say but, while I get his point – and it is important – I believe he may be extrapolating from communist censorship to a situation that is not analogous.

First of all, you can't argue that CRT is misunderstood and misused and then say, because it is so, that makes it true. Come on, Snyder, you know better than that.

The next point is, you can't ignore cancel culture on the left and then complain about it on the right. And I am talking not just about cancel culture in general, but as practiced by institutions, education and government. People have lost jobs and become personae non grata as a result of this kind of hysteria on the left (and I don't mean cases such as Harvey Weinstein). I am talking about people such as Bret Weinstein and many others.

Third point: We have been teaching about slavery, Jim Crow and race relations for quite a while in this country without the help or perspective of CRT, intersectionality or "anti-racism." I am not an authority on whether an honest recounting is being taught throughout America's education system dealing with our racist past – and it absolutely should be taught. But it is disingenuous to say that there is NOTHING to the objection of CRT (or whatever the term being used is) being taught in schools by GOP controlled states. There are countless examples of liberals and democrats (not to mention those on the right) pulling their kids out of schools because the kids are coming home saying that because they're white, there is something wrong with them. If this is the new teaching of race relations – and clearly it is in some places, such as Evanston Il – then this is clearly wrong according to the classical liberal standards I hold.

Finally, as a liberal Democrat, the last thing I want to see is Trump elected again. But if the Dems keep trying to explain away CRT and the kind of teaching that is going on is SOME schools regarding race relations, we are going to lose elections and move to right wing authoritarianism. On the other hand if the left continues to insist that all relationships must consider race or ethnicity or any of the intersectional categories (see Kimberle Crenshaw) that divide people as groups competing for political power, they we could end up with a left authoritarianism.

Good old classical liberalism (i.e. relating to people as individuals) is THE answer. It always has been. We just need to ensure that we keep pushing for equality under the law and equal opportunity and inequities will be of the acceptable kind. My remedy for what ails the US is to have affordable healthcare, housing, education and a living wage and let people decide what kind of life they want for themselves. If they want to take advantage of opportunities to move up economically, then work for it. Unfortunately, as we do not now have these remedies in place, the left blames liberalism and moves to the left. Wrong. Moving to the left only assures a more reactionary right.
