How many historical retrospectives have asked some form of the question, “What would we have done differently years ago if we knew then what we know now?” Those questions usually center around decisions that could have been made in the past that would prevent current tragedies from happening. Like Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler, naively believing that if he offered him no resistance to Nazi Germany’s occupation of the Sudetenland, he’d go no farther into any other part of Europe, and war would be avoided. We all know how that turned out.

Implicit in these questions is the self-exonerating assumption that there wasn’t enough information available at the time to have foreseen the outcome of whatever action or inaction is being reflected on.

The question has incredible relevance in the United States today. The difference is we have more than enough evidence right now to answer with certainty what will happen if the country fails to do the right thing. No one in this country will ever be able to plausibly claim that they didn’t see it coming.

If Donald Trump is elected to office in 2024, the United States as we know it will cease to exist. In its place will be a cruel, vindictive, self-serving, capricious dictatorship where one person’s twisted personal desires and demands, and his infantile need to exact revenge on his perceived enemies will be front and center, and the constitutional system of checks and balances will be neutered in service to that person’s demands.

Because of his age, he has nothing to lose by going for broke. He is desperate to be important and demands to be thought of as “historic.” He wants to be thought of as powerful, and wants to feel like he actually is powerful—which is why he has a long history of sexually assaulting weaker people. He wants everyone to be thinking about him all the time, so he will do whatever he needs to do to get attention—good or bad, and however fleeting the temporary high from it might be. But the Law of Diminishing Returns means that it will never be enough, and so he must continually step up the outrage and the outrageous. He wants to be remembered forever—even if for nefarious reasons. And because he is emotionally stuck in a very early stage of childhood development, he will only hold back if and when voters—and those in positions of governmental power—meet him (as you must do with a very young child) with a consistent and emphatic “No, Donald.”

We saw what he tried to do following his loss in the 2020 election, and we’ve seen and heard for the last three straight years what he promises to do again—and worse—if elected in 2024.

As with all rising dictators, however, the fundamental problem is not the authoritarian him or herself. The problem is the people who support them, give them wide leeway, and excuse their excesses over and over and over again.

There are two fundamental things to consider here: 1.) Not even the most evil authoritarian can rise to power without others enabling them to do so, and 2.) Once they are in power, they do not respect those who got them there. In fact, they are just as vulnerable as those who were touted as “enemies” along their path to gaining ultimate power and control.

No one is safe in a dictatorship. All one has to do is open a history book. It’s the same story every single time. Those who support their rise always believe the dictator will be their proxy retribution against those by whom they feel they’ve been victimized. That’s what the dictator always promises. That’s why Trump began his 2024 campaign by proclaiming to his little crowd of monied club members at Mar-a-Lago, “I am your retribution!” It’s why he says nonsensical things like, “I’m willing to go to prison for you,” or “They’re not after me, they’re after you, and I’m just standing in their way.” All of that is pure hogwash on its face, but there’s a big enough crowd that believes that it somehow makes sense.

In fact, these people are merely his unsuspecting tools to get him back in office so that he can exact his personal, petty, childish revenge on his perceived enemies.

We do not need to wonder what will happen if he is elected again. He’s told us, and he’s shown us. A book has been written about him titled, “Everything Trump Touches Dies.” And that will include this constitutional Republic if he gets the chance to touch it again, too.

ER doctor reacts to Mitch McConnell ambulance video

Published

Emergency responders took Sen. Mitch McConnell to an ambulance on a stretcher after being called to his home last month for a report of an unconscious person, according to new video of the incident and an eyewitness account.

A neighbor of McConnell told CNN that they opened their door to find commotion outside their home at around 8:30 a.m. on June 14, with two ambulances, a fire truck and Capitol Police officers blocking the entire street.

The neighbor said they learned from another eyewitness who saw the individual’s face that the person on the stretcher was McConnell and he was not wearing an oxygen mask.

CNN’s Annie Grayer has the details, and emergency physician Dr. Megan Ranney describes what struck her about the newly released video. Also, CNN’s Audie Cornish looks at GOP lawmakers’ reactions to Sen. McConnell’s medical situation.
