How The Escalating U.S.-China Tech War Could Hurt American Companies

Published

on

Smartphones. Cars. Toasters. Fighter jets. While vastly different on the outside, all four items share something similar on the inside: semiconductors.

“There’s no tech industry without semiconductors,” said Stacy Rasgon, senior semiconductor analyst at Bernstein Research.

Semiconductors represent a $574 trillion industry globally and are on pace to cross the trillion-dollar mark by the end of the decade. The industry has been caught in the crosshairs between the U.S. and China, two of the world’s largest economies.

The U.S., which leads the world in global semiconductor market share, recently issued sweeping restrictions on the sale of advanced chips and chipmaking equipment to China, in an attempt to restrict Beijing’s access to critical technologies. The Biden administration has said the export controls are aimed in part at preventing the use of American-made chips in China’s military. China, meanwhile, has accused the U.S. of abusing export restrictions to impede the country’s technological advances.

“We cannot allow China to have our most sophisticated semiconductor chips for use in the Chinese military,” U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in an interview with CNBC on Oct. 30, 2023. “That’s where we’ve drawn the cut line.”

Watch the video above to find out more about how the semiconductor industry became the centerpiece of a technological tug-of-war between the U.S. and China, and what the potential implications are for companies caught in the middle of it all.

Be Careful What You Wish For. This could backfire on the West.
While China may be behind for now the restrictions which are basically sanctions will end up making China fully self-sufficient in the Chip Market. Right now no country does not rely on another to produce chips as everything needed comes from many places.
While China may not be producing the newest cutting-edge chips for some time most chips sold are not the newest cutting edge. We just watched China hit 7nm and now 5nm a feat that many experts would not happen so fast. People think that when it bans something from China it has no access to that item. That is not true there are many ways that China can still get their hands on these items.
As we have seen with many things China catches up fast and they surpass other countries just the same. Sanctions will not work forever, they rarely if ever do. Don't count China out. They will get the technology, they will produce it eventually, and knowing China they will do it cheaper and faster in the long run. They are only 'delaying' the inevitable and making China accelerate what it has to do all that much faster. Sometimes you are better off leaving them alone than incentivizing them.

When US cannot beats China fairly, uses lowlife tactics such as sanction. US just want to contain China progress by all means which includes spreading lies, disinformation, false accusations, implementing sanction and ganging other countries to suppress China progress etc. US has lost their dignity in front of the world to see. US accelerates their own decline. Pretty stupid to me.

US lies and security is just an excuse. US has no balls to say that US just want to contain China progress.

Only time can tell these trade and tech wars initiated by US will deliver their goal, or just another Wolf Amendment in Space research. However, it is pretty much sure if these US politicians put more times and efforts on their domestic issues, rather than initiated all sorts of conflicts around the globe, their country will have far less homeless people, significantly reducing poverty, less drug issues, less crimes, less deficit in national economy, much better life for their ordinary citizens and …

Americans are the most jealous lot in the world. They don't want anyone to surpass them in any measure and will go to any lengths to ensure it. They say they don't want Chinese to access these advanced chips for military application. What are the US gonna do with it if not use in their defense? Make nuggets with em?

The position of both parties in the United States, especially the Republicans in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, has pushed the United States away from the mainstream of the world. When countries around the world think that the United States is a security hazard, how can they trust American companies? American companies are so deeply involved by the government and the army that they continue to impose arbitrary sanctions on other countries. No country is not afraid of this. The States is no longer the leader of the free market. If these politicians continue to divide the world, more and more people will lose confidence in the States.

Hmm if it's solely about concerns of chips being used in the military… Why at the same time dangle carrots for companies to build more chips in the US (with taxpayers money as well). Using it's military might and trade position, the us has bullied Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan into holding up this unilaterally beneficial sanction.

From history, we learned that no matter how big your idea is and how righteous you feel, without adapting to realities you will fail. Having seen this news report, I am certain that the USA is out of touch of reality, she is only full of self righteousness and self fulfillment. I wish her the best of luck.

  35. @ashchbkv6965

    December 16, 2023 at 1:53 pm

Good. Competition is what we consumers need, even if you're from US or China.

  36. @skyscraperfan

    December 16, 2023 at 1:53 pm

That battle is already lost for the US. We are at a point where AI can design new AI chips on its own. And you can run AI on any processor – just less power efficient.

Innovation is just much faster in China than in the US. China just has a lot more people who are well educated. In Beijing they have a huge specialized university just for aviation and aerospace. Sooner or later they will have the best planes. They already build the best smartphones.

The US have been the world's leading superpower for a long time, but those days are numbered. China already finances a big chunk of the US debt and that very much limits how much pressure the US can apply on China. China can probably build five or more tanks, missiles or battle chips for the price of one in the US. So China only needs to spend a small fraction of the US military budget to get the same fire power. Just look how much the Russian military achieves with a small budget. China already has ten times the GDP of Russia and it could easily have an army of five million soldiers and more.

Each country really has to decide if it will continue to be on the side of the old superpower or the new one.

  39. @co88liwan31

    December 16, 2023 at 1:53 pm

I think the US govt is honest, "ban china military development to prevent them from passing US troops", only this can help maintain the US hegemony and dollar, personally, I think this will only slow China but not stop it, the ban is not scalable, hurt both side and the goal is hard to achieve.

How Car Makers Are Switching To EVs | CNBC Marathon

Published

CNBC Marathon explores how Tesla, Rivian and Dodge’s new electric vehicles are transforming the automotive industry.

Over the past decade, Dodge has dug deep into its performance car heritage and become a brand known for brash American muscle cars with supercharged V-8 engines and ridiculous amounts of horsepower. But tightening regulations, rising fuel prices and the rise of the SUV are putting the squeeze on Dodge’s so-called “brotherhood of muscle.” It recently debuted the Charger Daytona SRT EV, an electric car that looks a lot like its popular supercharged Challenger and Charger. Will Dodge fans or EV buyers want it?

Five years after Elon Musk first announced the Tesla Semi, it’s finally hitting roads. CNBC visited Pepsi’s Frito-Lay facility in Modesto, California, where it is using the new electric trucks, to see whether the Semis live up to the hype.

A new electric vehicle company hopes to take on Tesla with its outdoor adventure trucks and SUVs. And its deal with Amazon to build 100,000 electric delivery vans could help it succeed. Founded in 2009, Rivian is focusing on upscale electric trucks and SUVs with an emphasis on outdoor adventure. CNBC’s John Rosevear calls them the “Patagonia of electric vehicles.” Last month, Rivian and Amazon rolled out the first of the electric vans. They are starting to deliver packages in a handful of cities, including Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago and Phoenix.

After manufacturing’s 40-year cycle of decline in the U.S., officials in Washington are trying to bring it back. This move could be a boom or bust for huge swaths of the American Midwest. This region once dominated the auto industry before rising global trade and automation sent domestic manufacturing employment into a tailspin. U.S. leaders hope that new laws such as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will help businesses create the green manufacturing jobs of the future.

Why Fuel Economy Rollbacks Will Spur More Trucks, More V-8 Engines

Published

Lowered compliance costs, greater control over products, more big engines, more pickup trucks. These are just some of the changes investors expect from the rollback of fuel economy rules and the elimination of fines. Data indicate pent up demand for pickup trucks, and many automakers are bringing back V-8 engines. At the same time, hybrid vehicles are surging, and electric vehicles have longer term structural demand in their favor.

The Race To Power AI Is Reshaping America’s Electric Grid

Published

on

By

AI data centers are driving unprecedented demand for electricity and putting renewed pressure on America’s power grid to modernize its equipment and develop greener, more efficient sources of power. Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon are all spending millions of dollars on local infrastructure upgrades and companies like SpaceXAI are even building off-grid power plants to power their data centers.

Google says its planned 780-megawatt data center in Pine Island, Minnesota, could offer a model for powering the AI boom. In a proposed agreement with Xcel Energy, Google says it will support 1,900 megawatts of new wind, solar and battery capacity, while minimum payments and exit fees are intended to protect local ratepayers if demand falls short.

CNBC examines whether projects like Pine Island can make the grid cleaner without shifting costs to existing customers, why some energy experts argue that smaller data centers could make better use of infrastructure already in place, and how utilities’ financial incentives can complicate efforts to build less.
