How Netflix And YouTube Changed Entertainment Forever | CNBC Marathon

Published

on

From Netflix and YouTube to AMC, CNBC Marathon explores the future of entertainment.

Over the past 25 years, Netflix revolutionized the film and television industry. The company amassed over 220 million subscribers across 190 countries, billions of hours watched for show Stranger Things and racked in 226 award wins. However, in 2022, things began looking rather different for the storied streamer while fighting an uphill battle to remain relevant in the streaming wars. In Q2 of 2022, Netflix lost nearly 1 million subscribers as rival Disney+ added roughly 14 million new subscribers.

Movie theaters across the U.S. and worldwide were dealt a massive blow during the pandemic. The domestic box office numbers plummeted from 2019’s box office of $11.2 billion to $3.8 billion in 2021. As for AMC Entertainment, the pandemic was chaotic. The theater company was virtually out of cash and nearly bankrupt, yet the 2021 “APE meme-stock” movement possibly saved the company.

And with more than 500 hours of video uploaded every minute and over 1 billion hours watched every day, Google’s YouTube is the world’s second largest search engine. And its meteoric growth hasn’t subsided, over 2 billion users visit the site every month. CNBC takes a look at how the video platform has changed over the past 15 years and if it can stay on top.

I always hated going to the movies. Sitting in a chair with my feet sticking to the floor, in a room that was too hot/too cold surrounded by coughing people and crying kids, unable to take a break to go to the bathroom or get food or drink was a horrible experience. I almost always got a headache and when a movie cost $10/person l stopped going.

Now l can sit in the comfort of my own home, eat a hot meal, drink a beer and pause, rewind and fast forward while watching my favorite movies. What’s not to love? I’m surprised anyone goes to the movies anymore.

Besides, most new movies are remakes, sequels and prequels from movies made 20-30 years ago. There’s nothing to go to the movies FOR!

The only response Netflix got from me by offering a streaming service with ads for the same price l used to pay for without ads, along with not letting my kids use my password is for me to cancel Netflix, just like l cancelled my cable 20 years ago when it got crazy expensive.

kinda confused 😕 is gala games, film and music going to be 3 separate tokens? I got into gala for the trifecta. Kinda scares me if I have to buy three different tokens after accumulating and holding gala for so long.

The best thing about Netflix is that there are NO ADS. The only thing missing is good movies and shows. The line up is ok as of 2023. I subscribe to others for shows that is not on Netflix. I really hate the ads. With Disney plus bundle with Hulu.

Our Entertainment causes ADHD, Dopamine and

Serious problems,. Please the entertainment be Banned throughout the Country.

The nursery rhymes on Youtube for example Cocomelon This channel is banned in our country because it makes the babies stick their minds in front of the eyes on the screen to see only this nursery rhymes, even in other Nursery rhymes Channels.

Don't let your young children and babies see like this stuck in some children's.

Netflix challenged them kids to be Transsexual, wordless , Lgbtq plus Racist Girl. All movies and series are Bad because they lost registrations.

This will be called: anti entertainment

I MISS when people uploaded full movies for free. A lot of niche art films from past decades were discoverable that way. now its so hard to find certain films online, anywhere, for free.

  33. @DudetaketheBus

    December 17, 2023 at 6:43 pm

That graph between Netflix and Disneys streaming service is highly distorted. A lot of it stems from Verizon giving their subscribers free Disney service number of paid subscribers would be different.

  34. @watchutub

    December 17, 2023 at 6:43 pm

    And it sucks so bad

  35. @nerdrage9739

    December 17, 2023 at 6:43 pm

I remember that "800M" addressable market figure. Netflix stock appreciated insanely because of that. But when they hit a wall and started to lose customers, the jig was up and the stock crashed. There's probably 300M good customers, the ones that will pay a reasonable rate for streaming. And there's a massive global audience of people who will watch stuff free with ads or pirate content. They're doing that now.

If Netflix or competitors wanted to shunt their oldest content to a free ad-supported tier, maybe they could start to grow subscribers again but not revenue. They've got the customers that they make revenue from now.

So it's going to be a battle between Netflix, Amazon, Disney etc over the high value customers. Disney has already thrown down the gauntlet. Iger announced that Disney+ might actually be yanked out of some countries because the ARPU is too low to bother with. There are other countries where they might stay but not try very hard with content for those countries. Zaslav at Warners has said similar things too.
