Where Do EV Batteries Go When They Die?
Dozens of electric vehicles are scheduled to debut in the next few years and over 300 million electric vehicles are expected to be on the world’s roads by 2030. The lifetime for an EV battery is estimated to be 12 to 15 years in moderate climates, but that doesn’t mean the batteries end up in landfills when they die.
There are a number of companies working on lithium-ion battery recycling including Li-Cycle, Redwood Materials and Spiers New Technologies, or SNT.
SNT focuses on refurbishing, repurposng and recycling EV batteries to give them a second life. It already works with Volvo, Porsche, GM, Ford and others to take old batteries and make them new again. The estimated reuse lifetime of an EV battery can range anywhere from five to 30 years.
By 2050, the demand for graphite, lithium and cobalt is expected to increase by 500 percent because of the battery boom, so extending the life of an EV battery can reduce the need for critical minerals and new mines.
CNBC visited SNT at its headquarters in Oklahoma City to see how an EV battery is given a second life.

In Australia it appears 90% of all Li-Ion batteries go to landfill and this would be the case in many other countries due to the lack of facilities that can safely dismantle large packs and the fire risks of shredding cells and packs. There are substantial cost involved in construction of these plants, the safety systems and trained staff to operate these processing plants. The failure even extends to solar PV panels of which 99% go to landfill.

Actually they don’t die at least not all the cells at once. Disconnect the bad once balanced the pack and you can drive on. We need to get into service batteries.

The numbers they quote are greatly overexaggerated.

A battery pack is only good for 12 to 15 years? I have a 2008 model year IC vehicle with just over 100K miles now. I plan to be driving that for at least another 50K or 100K miles, until the current engine or transmission needs a rebuild and the price of the rebuild does not make economic sense to keep the car. So at the pace I drive I will have that car for 30 years. EV's need to be competitive with that, or they are just not practical for me.

EVs /Lithium batteries & Thermal runaway .
According to the EV fanboys there is only one moving part in an EV , Point one EVs are either made in China then imported to the UK the money just straight out the country .two/ An EV made in the UK is not made here its just assembled and the company has to given billions of tax payers money for the factory to here ,and then the money just out the country anyway .
3/ dirty old piston engine vehicles . we are told have over 2000 parts ,they have to be tested every year and must be compliant so have emissions tests associated with all of the equipment . And someone has to make thos 2000 parts & they have families & mortgauges to pay .
So with the coming of the super green EVs people were getting paid to charge them ,There was a grant to buy them , they had froo road tax ,parking , Then charge for free at supermarkets ,dealers , then travel for pennies , that all disappeard and now its costs more to charge than to fill a diesel and diesel is more expensive in the UK than petrol .
Then the costs of insurance premiums shot up we find that EVs being transported on ships have self ignighted and due to the fact that a Lithium battery fire cant be put out with water /Co2 or Halon they are left to burn as is with Lithium battery fires in homes where E skate boards /E bikes /scooters /& mobility scooters have caught ablaze due to the thermal runaway effect of a Lithium battery catching alight . There is also a problem with some of the charging systems going over the top , i own a mobility scooter its 60v there is room for one more battery but mine are lead acid ,The charger says 60v on the front but 72 v on the back , on looking on the frame there is a tag that says 72 v , the charger is supposed to be a smart one it only turned its self off twice after that it just keeps going ,i now time it and disconect it at 65v .
TV news outlets wont discuss the issues with EVs or the problems associated with Lithium batteries because for one they are part of the great Green sysrem and the money is to big
The reality is if you have something with a Lithium battery do not charge it over night and put a smake alarm close to it if you do ,Inc the EV !

A report said that 3,000 children died in Africa working in cobalt mines in 2022. Most of the mines are owned by the Chinese. The lack of security and health guide lines are rampant. Pay and benefits are abusive. Modern day slave work in front of the whole world. Imagine by 2030 how many will die with a 500% increase in EVs.

It's all fake piar. It's only refurbishment not recycling. They take 10 dead bateries and make one half way good, by keeping alive components. The rest dead parts are send to landfil. They will never tell you that. Same happens with plastic recycling in the UK. Only small portion is recycled, the rest is send in conteiners to 3rd world countries. Don't believe fake media.

You say SNT handles 15,000 batteries a month. The guy you interviewed said they get 50 to a 100 a day. At 30 days of 100 that's 3000 batteries. If it's the lower number it would be 1500. Did you just add a zero to get the 15,000 number?
