How The North Face Competes With Patagonia

Published

on

For more than a half-century, The North Face has competed in the space outfitting mountain climbers and skiers. But the outdoor recreation brand is now hoping to become a significant player in the $185 billion streetwear market. In the three months ending September 2021, The North Face had revenue of $883 million, 31% higher than a year earlier. And while interest in outdoor activities like camping has surged, climate change and consumer trends like sustainability have led to a range of challenges and opportunities for the brand.

A couple of things to improve reporting in your next videos:
    – most if not all YoY revenue increase graphs that you've provided are 2020-2021. This can easily be a correlation of an anomaly spike due to people getting stuck at home in 2020. Using that isolated data to show "increase in outdoor interest" is a bit loose. If more data was supplied before after 2020-2021, that can show us a better picture.
    – when you introduced the part about Patagonia, you showed stats on how they're very green and sustainable. However your source is Patagonia itself, probably just from their marketing/website. If you've shown efforts of other studies, organizations verifying Patagonia's statements, that would be better and would hold more ground. Reading off their website as reference is like asking a liar if they're lying lol. You've given them essentially free marketing. These could easily be green washing right. Not saying Patagonia is false. Just saying the information gathering and credibility of this video could've been better

As an avid outdoor enthusiast I couldn't care less about a company's sustainability. I want a good product at a good price. Period! But then again I'm Gen X and don't like politics mixed with business.

My admiration for The North Face ended when I saw my TNF hiking boots falling apart two years after purchasing them. I understood that TNF is the fast fashion of the outdoor brands. Patagonia has a different vision and encourages recycling and reusing clothes. I just bought my first Patagonia piece – the Retro X vest – second hand of course.

As a rock climber I love the fact that the north face sponsors climbers and enables them to live out their passions. TNF is also a big sponsor of a lot of climbing events and I’m glad they’re such a big contributor to the sport that I love

Re German Benno Dorer, CEO of VF Corporation (North Face’s senior holding company) AND, simultaneously, chairman of Clorox (the bleach company):
“ What nationality is the name Benno?
The name Benno is primarily a male name of Hebrew origin that means Son.” If you Google “Dorer”, it can be a Jewish surname.

Boycott North Face.. They are not neutral and into ESG and DEI and all that crap!!!

  13. @manuelpopp1687

Only a woman with some ridiculous jacket and fitting, similarly ridiculous glasses can use the words "authenthic" and "North Face" in one sentence.

  14. @manuelpopp1687

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

TNF produces jackets middle aged men wear to commute to work and rich kids wear when their mum drives them to school in her SUV. They are not associated with the outdoors, but rather a lifestyle product for people who bought into the consumerism that destroys our planet. They just follow trends. Patagonia set trends.
Collaborating with some useless fashion brands might make them money, but it makes them even more detestable. TNF is a good example for everything that is wrong with this world today. They use tons of advertisements to create a superficial image that customers want to make part of their own superficial personality. But no, buying a TNF jacket does not make you an extreme outdoors guy who achieves the highest goals and pushes his limits. You're still just some dude sitting in an office 8 hrs a day.

The BS Facebook initiative is to brainwash more people into buying their stuff while at the same time massage their virtue. The thoughts and prayers brigade.

I wore North Face exclusively for many years (since the very early 2000s). However, I have been quite disappointed by the quality of their products in the last few years or so. I feel like they've definitely gone downhill compared to what they once were in regard to the quality and longevity of their jackets. I have now switched over to Patagonia and am extremely happy. I recently bought the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L rain jacket and the Nano Puff winter jacket, and I've been very impressed by their performance and quality. When you live in New England like I do, you need a variety of jackets for all sorts of weather. I've bought some Patagonia T-shirts as well, which are super comfortable and have an amazing fit. I will absolutely be sticking to Patagonia from now on.

Ok so Northface is a capitalism nightmare that are not environmentally sensitive. They are a bad company. Shame on north face nice job hiring athletes to better your reputation. North face is not sustainable

  20. @jererojasg

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

I'm 10 minutes into the video and this is far from being a comparative analysis between North Face and Patagonia. This is simply a North Face informercial that marginally mentions the existence of other competitors

  21. @peternorthrup6274

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

There is a big difference between north face expedition gear and the cheap stuff they sell in the stores.

  22. @thinline8504

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

north face cant compete with Patagonia… Patagonia wins by a landslide… North face jacket was thing… then I fell in LOVE with vintage Patagonia sweaters.. How can north face compete ? The Patagonia Synchilla sweater alone dominates the entire north face brand..

  23. @luvdocumentary

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

I have consciously stopped buying The North Face apparel after learning their unethical product placement on wikipedia. Instead, I've been purchasing Patagonia when is on sale in their website.

  24. @masoudabdun-noor8675

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

I have a 2004 Micro Puff from the 1st run & it’s still as it was then. The DWR’s still so good I had to call The Forge to ask if it had been resprayed…nope. I toss it on right after cold runs to lock in the heat that’s still rapidly escaping to avoid the post-run chills. Simple & versatile 👌🏾

  25. @UpNorthOutWest

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

Patagonia is responsible for backing organizations that starve orca whales by reducing salmon populations via their anti hatchery ideology.

also that jacket you're wearing was made by a 13 year old in a sweat shop that got paid 25 cents for the day.

Patagonia is not the brand you think it is.

  26. @ruisen2000

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

    Patagonia: Environmentally responsible
North Face: Environmentally responsible in advertising only

  27. @Guruvalverde

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

I stopped looking at the north face when they partnered with Gucci and the other silly company of Extreme. Plus, these people interviewed are just into business, giving a damn about responsibility and trust. SAD. The North Face equals FASHION, while Patagonia aims to a more conscious buyer.

  28. @curtisbilgray3615

  30. @tallky

I would really love to support Patagonia as a company, but their stuff just isn't made to fit tall people.

  31. @BrandonWhitley

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

Pretty sure Patagonia was the first company to ban Facebook ads but okay

  32. @joeyjkim

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

This is a video about The North Face, but somehow became an advertisement for Patagonia

  33. @fatpat4382

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

Why don’t you interview the people wearing TNF, instead of people don’t even bother to wear TNF during the show?

  34. @bwz7275

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

the problem with these companies is that they start out making amazing products! then they sell out or try to produce a lesser line. this only leads to all their products being crap.!!

  35. @chocolatechipslime

    December 21, 2023 at 9:55 pm

I’d never heard of Patagonia until a few years ago, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Patagonia store even. But then again I don’t go to malls
