How This Roofing Company Is Taking On Tesla’s Solar Roof

Published

on

GAF Energy is taking on Tesla with the release of its new solar shingles. While the concept of solar shingles that blend in seamlessly with a regular roof has been around for decades, higher costs and lower efficiency and reliability as compared with traditional solar panels have prevented the product from taking off. But GAF Energy is the sister company to GAF, one of the largest roofing manufacturers in the world. And it believes that its deep ties to the roofing industry have allowed it to design a cost-competitive solar roof product that’s ready for the masses.

CLARIFICATION 1/5/22: At 11:02 in the video, there is a comparison made that needs clarification. The video states, “Given the GAF shingle’s dimensions and its 45 watt rating, it would produce, at maximum, 5.96 watts per square foot.” However, because of the way GAF Energy’s shingles overlap on the roof, 56% of each shingle is made up of non-solar material. If you consider the efficiency of only the active solar cells, GAF Energy’s shingle produces 14.29 watts per square foot, which the company says would be on par with the efficiency of Tesla’s shingle.

Tesla is far from perfect but one thing they have right is a uniform appearance. Most of these solar roofs are about as subtle as a turd floating in a pool.

With the 2023 Inflation reduction act, 30% can be claimed on the total price. Normally only the solar part has the tax credit but since the roofing is integrated, i.e. it can’t be separated, the total cost gets the tax credit. So, very beneficial for people who need to replace roof.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

So many things. The work of translational health eco systems and Energy/water/innovation/infrastructure hubs (eco systems)… have overlay. The health needs of size are contingent on needs like referrals and community needs… ripe with entrenched needs and interests, but workable and enough revenue streams to bring this reality to the forefront without caving in the systems.

The larger engineers and design thinking applies to health but… not the same. The protection of rights matters so very much. The large scale grants and RFP’s and such of community investments… the markets drive various eco systems. It’s fairly obvious that communities and energy and things like risk/rears pools and insurance and needs of connections with community.

The new tech needs to work with systems… heath interoperability matters a lot. There’s so much data and statistics and history of understandings.

The economics of regional growth and understandings of these connections. Rivers and disease flow across lines… there are also very real security needs and all sorts of policy works and legal matters. Fractionated improvement helps these realizations and work.

Veterans and VA and health needs help with work… the nature of better and all.

Disruption and change management are not the same things. Privacy, transparency and proper oversight matter.

I have no desire and don’t advocate for controlling industry… but of course… standard oil wasn’t ok. So… here we are y’all. And oh yea… the planet and systems of economics and security and liberty… there’s real needs of better stake holder understandings.

In the past 6 months I have filled out a GAF website request for information regarding a new Timberline solar shingle with the expectation of a new roof within the next 12 months. I have yet to hear from them. Located in Northern California, I have trouble believing that once they found my location on Google Maps that I would not qualify as a potential customer. Pretty poor customer service response makes me wonder how they would treat me if I actually became a customer. They should have responded.

  32. @Wilheminia

    December 21, 2023 at 8:29 am

I was recently informed by a GAF solar shingle installer that I must have my entire roof shingled when this product is used or else GAF could not offer a warranty.
This was a problem for me because only 6 months ago I had one side of my house re-roofed (Owens-Corning) due to leaks, but now that I am ready for solar I would be required to re-roof that side again – only this time with GAF – before I could get a warranty with the GAF solar shingles. It's all-or-nothing with GAF.

Why There’s An ‘Extremely Fierce’ Battle For TSMC’s Limited Chip Manufacturing Capacity

Published

on

By

Unstoppable demand for AI is leading to a capacity crunch on factory lines at the world’s leading chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor. And it could put a chokehold on AI’s ability to scale. Analysts tell CNBC that Nvidia, Apple, Broadcom, AMD and others are locked in an “extremely fierce” competition to get their GPUs, CPUs and custom AI chips made at TSMC. Capacity can’t come online fast enough, despite TSMC’s rush to build new fabs in Taiwan, Japan and Arizona, where has expanded investment to $265 billion. The strain has made one man at TSMC “the most popular person on the planet,” as chip start-ups and big name CEOs visit Taiwan to ask him for wafer allocation. It’s also created a rich opportunity for Intel, as customers look to the long-struggling foundry arm of the U.S. chip manufacturer for a second source.
