   Sometimes I think the older Americans get, the more they become idiots. Their logic is – illogical. I could go on, but by now, the point should be clear: Around the world, leaders of wealthy, developed nations are struggling with poor approval ratings. For each one, there are individual factors often cited to explain their problems — age, lengthy tenure, domestic policy disagreements, a financial scandal in Japan. Those factors are all real and have an impact.

   But stand back and look at the overall pattern, and it’s hard not to conclude that something larger is at work. A similar pattern emerges if we look at the approval ratings of presidents over the last 70 years. Starting with President Eisenhower and running through President George H.W. Bush, American leaders for 40 years spent most of their tenure with approval ratings above 50%. The periods when presidents dropped below 50% corresponded to major national traumas — escalation of the Vietnam War in the last few years of President Johnson’s tenure, the Watergate scandal for President Nixon and the Iran hostage crisis for President Carter.
   The last 20 years — since President George W. Bush’s reelection in 2004 — shows the mirror image: Except for brief periods, including honeymoons at the beginning of their tenures, none of the presidents since then have popped above 50% for a sustained time. President Trump never got majority approval in his entire four years in office; Biden was above 50% for his initial months but soon dropped below. As with the international comparison, one can pick out individual reasons why each president has failed to gain majority support, but the persistent pattern suggests a larger explanation.
   Globally, middle-income countries have seen big increases in living standards in the last couple of decades, and abject poverty around the world has declined a lot, but average living standards in many wealthy countries have plateaued. Income stagnation isn’t the only problem wealthy countries have faced. High levels of immigration have brought enormous benefits and dynamism but have also increased social tension. Countries such as Japan, which resisted immigration, have suffered from rapid aging of their populations as birthrates declined. Changing gender roles and cultural diversity have brought more equality — and backlashes. Those factors contributed to a sharp decline in the belief that political leaders are looking out for the interests of average citizens.
   Trust in government has fallen in the U.S. as the share of Americans who think the country is on the wrong track rose, and partisan lines have hardened. All that leads to lower job approval for presidents. Layer on top of that the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As I wrote recently, a lot of Americans have tried to put the pandemic behind them and have stopped talking about it. But the trauma it caused worldwide won’t go away so easily: We remain a society in recovery. The fact that Biden shares his unpopularity with other leaders doesn’t make his difficulties any less real. The comparison with others should, however, make people a bit more skeptical of the belief that some other Democrat would do significantly better. If the underlying reality in all these countries is that unhappy voters punish whichever party is in power, then replacing Biden with someone else won’t necessarily solve anything.
   People need to open their eyes and look at the worldwide big picture and see that all these things that they’re complaining about isn’t happening only here in the Unites States, but it’s happening all over the world, so it’s not just one man or one person that’s causing all this discontent.    Dr. West is a lot older than I would like yet he's very very smart and seems to be willing to be a free thinker I'm looking to throw my time and money into someone not getting AIPAC money

   The argument that a vote for a third party candidate takes votes away from our two clown system, rest on a false assumption. It assumes that if there were no third party, all the votes would go to one of status quo knuckleheads. Dream on, you never had these votes in the first place and most of us would rather stay home than vote for some jerk we don't want.

    I really like Cornel West. Only thing that scares me is that he seems to be further left than Joe and his squad. I left the dem party a couple of years ago for 2 reasons-1)spewing too much hate and 2) paying/pandering for votes. I read that Mr. West is for "Medicare for All". We can't even afford our own gas/groceries…How would we all do with another "freebie" that throws us further in debt? We DO NEED TO retire Joe, though. Sooner rather than later.

    Greens n Libertarian loved neither candidate in 2016 to vote respective parties . So voted hate emotion not love . Hate cost them 3 Authoritarian scotus . They will vote Love of Dr West .     Dr West doesn't have to win the election-far from it. he just needs to get enough support to bring the dems to the table, promising [in writing of course] to bring the party farther left. right now, dems/liberals swing right. they will need to to accommodate the progressives and independents in order to get their votes. Cornell West can be a kingmaker if he withholds his support unless her gets the concessions he wants. and the dems will have no choice but to appease him and his supporters. now, in 2016, they decided the'd rather give the election to trump than to Bernie. let's see if they'll do the same thing with Dr West.

    The Wealthy have gobbled up the country leaving the poor and middle-class as rent-poor nomads with all the nice and even marginally desirable places to live locked away. Both Democrats and Republicans have done nothing to stop this as people fall into the streets as the rich consumer doesn't cut back and drives up inflation and housing shortages, it's pissing people off! It's time to try somebody else. Another invisible risk for democrats is potential U.S. and Western military intervention in West Africa. This includes bills in Congress to punish African countries for doing business with Russia. The US and Europe are awful trade partners who have ripped off and patronized the continent for decades they want somebody else. The African-American community has known this for some time. Black voters are watching and they will frown on Biden for sure. Democrats could literally lose the black vote because of something overseas because leadership doesn't account for how U.S. foreign policy is seen by the population. Count on the Hispanic vote? Well, they are trending conservative.
