Dude. The guy hoping for 10-20k forgiveness on a 250k student loan. Bro, you’re screwed. The forgiveness was never gonna help you.
Then you buy a house and start a family?!?!
Dude, you’ve got a catastrophic financial, death wound. You should be living on subsistence level until you pay that off, which would probably take 10 years of hard work.
You can not afford to make multiple bad decisions like this in Our society.
Those loans are never going away

$240k for social work? Did he think at all before making that choice?
People are asking how anyone falls for this scam. Young people don’t know the value of money. They think that if they can do something then it will work out. They wouldn’t lend me $200k if there wasn’t a good job at the end of this. They don’t understand that if you make $60k salary and you owe $60k debt that’s not “about a year to pay off” that’s about 15 years. When you earn $60k you don’t keep all that much of it.
@lesleyt7438

A three year pause was a three year opportunity to pay down the principal. Thinking the government is going to save you from your own stupid decisions is lunacy.

"It's a privilege to pay off your student loan debt"??? Um No! I can think of 100 other things I would have loved to spend that $50k on, instead of paying off my student loans responsibly.

These individuals and so many more like them took out loans, signed their names and got way in over their heads in loans! You signed, now pay up! It’s not the American taxpayers responsibility to “forgive” your loans! These borrowers do not get to complain! They weren’t complaining when the money was released to them or the university in the first place. I didn’t hear any complaints back then. The financial illiteracy in this Country is mind boggling and down right horrible!

I dont get why they keep saying loans have been discharged when Im still paying back everything with interest. The “Save Program” doesnt save anything. It just takes longer to payoff and your still incurring interest.

We should have the option of opt-ing in to various social programs such as student loan forgiveness.
If an individual wants to participate, they may have portions of the student loans forgiven but must pay increased income and property taxes for the duration of their life and those who do not want to participate, their tax rates are unaffected.

It's ironic that she's putting money away for her children's education while buried in education debt.
@FoamandStuff
December 24, 2023 at 6:45 am
Just pause the interest payments and let people pay back the principal only. The interest is what’s hurts the most because you can pay your student loans for years and if you’re on an income based repayment plan which is most popular, often times the repayments are not enough to cover the interest payments so the principal never gets repaid. And the interest builds on top of interest. That’s how you end up with higher and higher loan balances and the debt doesn’t seem to go down. Also for those who already paid back the original principal borrowed in total repayments their loans should be forgiven because the only reason they can’t pay off the full balance is because of interest on interest debt that has ballooned. There are a lot of organizations that profit from student loans. Student loans are packaged with hundreds of loans or thousands and sold off as fixed income bonds to investors. It’s called a SLAB. Remove the profit motives and make the money borrow have no interest. The government doesn’t need to profit off education and neither does Wall Street. No student loan forgiveness just change the repayment rules and allow bankruptcy for some who are severely debt burden and can never repay the loan just like with every other debt in America.

I’m on the tail end of my loans and owe $16k @ 7.76% paying $100/month in interest, which is manageable. I can’t imagine students graduating these days with a bachelors and $150k+ in debt. Even more so, doctors and attorneys graduating with $500k+ must CRINGE looking at those interest payments!!!

Loan forgiveness just means transferred to everyone esle. So now the general public has to make up the money the students won't pay.

December 24, 2023 at 6:45 am
You bought a house with that much student loan debt, wow!! Don’t take out a quarter million dollars in loans if you aren’t going to repay. It’s asinine how deluded and victim minded some people are. Yes college is expensive but I went through 11 years of college to get my PhD with no family support and lived poor. I left with $55k in loans, and that included using loans to buy a used car. $250k in loans for a masters is an F in common sense; maybe we should raise the bar for admissions and the loan crisis would go away. And of course I agree college is too expensive (largely because of loans propping up this market) and that loans should be more limited. But take some responsibility for your decisions, don’t socialize your debt on the tax payers’ back.

I'm not paying either way. If this country has 100 billion for Israel, 200 billion for Ukraine, and trillions in tax cuts for corporations and billionaire, I'm getting a free degree.

Some of these comments are actually crazy AF. For all the cocky people with the snide comments lets think about this for a second. If your country is in a trillion+ student loan debt crisis maybe the barrowers are not the problem, have you ever considered that the system in place is failing? Colleges are not for the betterment of the students, they are a business. People are in debt because you have useless degrees for careers that dont exist or careers that are outdated. Its just that simple bro.

There's too big to fail and too small to care about, I guess.
You'd think with living in a Democracy the people would have more say how their money is spent…but nope, free money for illegal immigrants and giving out weapons to countries most can't locate on a map is more important then future generations of their own country.

All everyone needs to know is that every loan created by fiat (dollars) is immoral and therefore illegitimate. Originated in theft by force, fiat loans are as valid as the demands of a thief . Don’t just buy gold and silver. Stop paying back mortgage debt, student loans, credit cards, and cad payments, and end the fed and crash the bond market

I am sorry, if this is the attitude of the average American, then the world shouldn't be lending to the US. Utterly irresponsible, total lack of self-awareness, exceptionally self-absorbed those are some of the things which cross my mind from what I view as an "educated" American from across the pond.

I’m so happy students got three years of interest free payments. So many were able to pay off their loans or save up.
