Putin probably thought that the occupation will happen the way Soviets occupied the Baltic states – the three just surrendered. Russians set up new governments in the three republics that still independent but are selected by Russians and those governments first aligned with Soviet Union, and after asked to join Soviet Union. Ukraine choose to fight and with all our help saved Europe.

The battle for Hostomel airport was the decisive battle that determined the fate of Kyiv. The Russians lost that battle, and Kyiv was saved. About a month later the Russians scurried back to Russia and Belarus with their tail between their legs, having been soundly beaten in Kyiv and the north.
