Iran War: Bessent Sanctions Plan Threatens US-China Tensions | Daybreak Europe 8/25/2026
Bloomberg Daybreak Europe is your essential morning viewing to stay ahead. Live from London, we set the agenda for your day, catching you up with overnight markets news from the US and Asia. And we’ll tell you what matters for investors in Europe, giving you insight before trading begins.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s threat to unleash an “economic D-Day” against Iran risks setting the US on a collision course with China, its main trading partner. Bessent promised an “economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe” as President Donald Trump tries to wind down his unpopular war in the Middle East.
US stock-index futures gained as pressure on technology shares eased, signaling tentative optimism ahead of key earnings this week that will test confidence in the artificial intelligence trade. Bitcoin advanced to a three-month high.
And Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume prepared to confront workers over his plans to radically shrink the carmaker, a test of his ability to push through sweeping changes at speed.

Putin Moves to Escalate War in Ukraine, Nvidia Fuels Faith in AI Boom | Opening Trade 8/27/2026
Russia is preparing to escalate attacks on Ukraine after concluding that negotiations for a peace deal have reached a dead end, according to three people close to the Kremlin.
For now, Russia is weighing an intensification of powerful conventional ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv, including the center of the capital, and infrastructure targets in other Ukrainian cities, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is sensitive.
Nvidia, the chipmaker at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom, gave a bullish sales outlook for fiscal 2028, easing concerns that AI spending is poised to lose momentum.
The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. With analysis you won’t find anywhere else, we break down the biggest stories of the day and speak to top guests who have skin in the game. Hosted by Anna Edwards, Guy Johnson and Tom Mackenzie.

In a world of dictators and authoritarians, a democratic gridlock is a refreshing reminder that the free world is alive and well and not taking any sh*t from anyone. Not even their own domestic constituencies and counterparts. It’s really quite beautiful, and to be celebrated!

Its like the plane has crashed in the cold and frigid Alps and the only survivors are doing exceptionally well sustaining a life giving fire in a cave to keep ine another warm and alive …this is a description of the chemistry between Lisa and Jonathan and Tom Keene recently….again the market and economy is in uncharted territory, people are being laid off left and right, we barely made it out of Covid, China is racing to the top, Ai is threatening jobs, etc….but here is the crew keeping everyone up, informed, and entertained like the golden era of radio when we were at war and our families gathered around the stereo listening to music and theatre…or filling all the pews at all the local churches in town to hear the Gospel, sing and rejoice and hope on the Lord. Things are tough and getting tougher but its guys like you showing up everyday, and your resilient spirits that keep us engaged, involved and hopeful even as we teether on the brink of desperation and destruction….Thank you and Thank God
