   we have the "free kill" law in florida. this was put in place so Doctors will not be accountable for mistakes made on a adult over 25, not married, no children under 18. The law can swing too far the other way. Each case needs to be looked at. Every life is valuable and humans do make mistakes but lets hope the law doesnt swing so far the other way.

   As a retired ICU nurse, this case is terrifying. Vanderbilt is at least as much responsible as Ms. Vaught, given the systemic issues. Given this criminal case, and the recent criminal case in which EMTs were convicted, I don't plan to return to clinical nursing. There is no wonder why we don't have enough nurses.

    I don’t know how to feel about this. The conviction is necessary due to someone loosing their life, it also ensures that nurses be on their game. If this was just swept under the rug it would continue happening.

    It breaks my heart this whole thing. The loss of a patient, the mistake and most of all the criminal prosection. We seem to forget that we are all human and prone to errors. Some errors are horrendous and some are not. It is so very unfortunate that we work in such stressful conditions. We rush and rush from one thing to the next. You can be poring meds but get interrupted multiple times for calls for immediate action for another patient. Then you pickup where you left off. Rereading and rechecking if you read that right, is the time right, is the patient right etc. Too much rushing, far to easy to make mistakes.
    Nursing calls for more staff falls on deaf ears and so the system keeps limping along! The nurses pay the price, yet we love our work and will keep on trying!❤

    That's people's lives, you can't have "medication errors". That is gross negligence. Justice was served… wake up nurses, and double/triple check. Smh

    I work as an operating room nurse in the OR. I get scared ALL the time. The amount of legal paperwork you have to do plus computer charting and then doing instrument count is alot. One miss count and youre heading to court cause the missing raytec or blade is in the body of the patient. Sometimes i had to count 40 sutures it was nuts. Not sure if i can do that again

    I don’t believe she deserves jail time. Jail is for intentionally criminal acts. That being said I think she should absolutely lose her license and not be allowed to care for another person again.

    Absolutely ridiculous that nurses and other employees have to live through… she absolutely was a scapegoat. I said it from day one…. although i feel sorry for the family who lost their lived one, nurses (and other employees) shouldnt be placed in this position

    3:27 she’s really going to laugh after her primary nurse showed her the empty bottle of medication that killed this woman. She’s really going to do that on this documentary when being questioned about it?…… yeah sure it’s all fun and games. Oh that was the wrong medication. It was a lethal dose smiles, and giggles when being asked later about it. 🤦‍♂️Bruh what has this world come to?….. wait a minute now and let me re-emphasize and put it into a perspective that will hit close to home. What if it was your mom or loved one that she did that too and smiles and giggles about it when being asked about the lethal dosage how would you feel about that?

    How many docs don't lose their jobs over bad outcomes, even accidental ones? We didn't keep vec in our regular medication system, it was kept in the code cart where accidents like this wouldn't happen. Glad I'm retired, wouldn't want to bear the accountability that no other profession has. RaDonda, I'm so sorry – mistakes happen and you're a good person who didn't deserve to have everything taken away.

    I've worked in many different professions and have always made mistakes. It happens in every profession, especially when it is a fast paced environment. It's called being human. Thank God the judge and the patient's family could see that!

    As a nurse for many years, I've been put in so many unsafe situations due to short staffing and vague policies. I no longer work directly with patients but my heart sank when I accidently gave the wrong instructions to a patient. Luckily I was able to correct it in time but it was so scary. Being a nurse is STRESSFUL and SCARY. I always tell ppl not to become nurses. It's not a safe space.

    After spending 25 years as a registered nurse I can tell you that I’m not surprised by this mistake. I know from experience that most nurses are subjected to patient over loads, taking care of way to many patients most of the time, being made to feel guilty if you call in sick, etc. we’re always told in orientation to not come to work if sick, especially if you might be contagious but if you do that your are treated like your not a good nurse and are spoken to like your letting the team down. Frequently being asked to work back to back shifts. This went on the entire time I worked as a nurse. They never have enough staff. Never. After finally going out on disability at 55 because of two herniated discs in my back from the physical strain of the work and lack of adequate help I had to have surgery. My back will never be “fixed” but at least I can stand up fairly straight most days but every minute I am awake I am in some kind of pain. I am no slouch and I worked my butt off and am quite a tough cookie if I do say so myself but nursing is the hardest job I ever had. Pretty thankless sometimes too. We do it because we want to help others but we should have the support of the administrators, adequate help and better working conditions. Is that really to much to ask? Charging her with homacide is just a bridge to far. Accidentally killing a patient is a horrible experience but it was an accident. The patients family treated her with more kindness and forgiveness than the judicial system did. Good way to make sure no one decides to go into nursing in the future.

    Rediculous. Everyone makes mistakes. Dont give lame excuses about hours, over worked, cant go potty, or they rushed us. I would love to see someone in the military say this or a police officer. If you hold someone's life in your hands your held to higher standards.

    Should she just say my bad? Of course she should be held accountable she screwed up bottom line. I don't care how many hours you work that shouldn't prevent you from reading a bottle! I can't imagine what other things she must have done if looking carefully at the vial you're about to inject someone with is hard.

    Malpractice kills 250K patients a year…and that's just in hospitals. Third highest leading cause of death…and none of you go to jail. Cops kill 1 thousand and everyone wants a pound of flesh…and then some. GTFO

    As a nursing student early on in the nursing program i was assigned to 1 patient who was in essence a vegetable. I did my 5 checks and administered all of the patients meds via feeding tubes or a port. After i had finished cleaning up and repositioning my patient, he sat up and said "Ellie, I have to go now" … OMFG i ran to get my clinical supervisor who was in a doctor's meeting that I busted into telling her that i made a terrible mistake! As we're running down the hall my supv asked what room … i gave her the room # and she said Deborah! that is your patient!!! I said "the patient in that room has my patient's wrist band but he sat up and talked to me! and my patient is NOT ABEL to do that! … She gets to the room and says, that's your patient. I said "that's impossible !!" I read MY patient's chart from beginning to end and all the tests prove MY patient is NOT ABEL to sit up and talk!!!! long story short, wife agreed to pull the plug as the doctor's had been trying to get her to do for years unbeknownst to me .. The wife came to me and thanked me but i didn't know what to say to her as i didn't know what the hell was going on!!! My clinical supv who later than year became our Nursing Director for our school's nursing program advised me that i would be a good hospice nurse and gave me a letter of recommendation for Hospice Nursing

    Systemic problems in nursing such as having to over ride the PIXUS for meds and having too many patients for 1 nurse + mentoring new nurses should be the supervisor's responsibility not the floor nurse. Since a patient died from a med error, this nurse should lose her license as she failed to the 5 checks when administering meds but if you do the math, we nurses don't have time to do that as we have too many patients with too many meds. The math itself proves there is a system problem of assigning too many patients for each floor nurse.

    It’s amazing to see all of these comments by weak new generation people who probably can’t hold a job in the first place because they have no work ethic, and then they get on here and sympathize and complain about how hard it is to work this woman’s job and how she is should be justified in this situation. The reality is life is that everything in life requires decisions, actions and consequences. Overworked or underworked, everyone is subject to the same set of rules in life. If you make bad decisions, you pay the consequences, period!! A lot of the problems with the world today lies directly in the mentalities behind the people making these 9,000+ comments. How about people take responsibility and say it for what it is.

    Nurses will be walking on eggshells every time they go to work. This is ridiculous. This type of case puts us all in jeopardy. This woman is not the problem it’s the system that can’t be replaced because some committee or person does not see it as broken; if it’s not broken don’t fix it mentality.
    Did this woman have a history of fatal deaths in her care? It takes an act of congress to get serial killing nurses and doctors to prison, why pick on this one person with this one incident? Where is the common sense in this case? It seems she is the scapegoat for the system to make needed and necessary changes to their system, and that is where the real problem lies.
    I’m so sad that this woman had her life ruined because of a hospital needing a reason to replace a broken system. Crazy! Aren’t we smarter than this?

    Reckless homicide? How could the jury come to this conclusion? I’m stunned. This was a fatal mistake, yes. No question. Malicious? Intentional? No to both, so, NOT GUILTY. Who in the world was leading this jury? Wow. Yes, she was ‘responsible’
    for the death of a patient but why would the jury find her guilty of anything? It is a dangerous precedent. Nurses are very ethical and now they may not feel comfortable with the health care system because they could face homicide charges?

    A nurse killed my son he had part of his scull removed and his hands were supposed to be tied to the bed until the helmet they ordered for him to wear was in and she untied him and left his icu room and we came up to see him and he was hitting himself in the head. The doctor even told us the nurse should have never untied him or left him unattended. No I didn’t sue but it would have been nice to Al least get some sort of apology.

    It is the HOSPITAL who should’ve been sued…. Work a month on the floor of the hospital, this woman deserves redemption. This is absolutely disgusting what they did to her! Way to drive nurses away from patient care.

    It’s extremely difficult to give a patient the wrong medication. EXTREMELY. There is a huge amount of failure present if you can’t do the basics of your job. Simple DOB check.
