How Odometer Fraud Became A $1 Billion Problem
Odometer fraud is a stealthy and a lesser known form of fraud that is hard to detect, but can cost a car buyer thousands. Fraudsters will roll back odometers on cars to hide the vehicle’s mileage in the hope of extracting a better price. And as used car prices rose during the pandemic, odometer fraud could’ve become a more attractive way to make some extra bucks. About 10.5 million cars on American roads have had their odometers tampered with in some way, and about 1.9 million individuals have had their odometers rolled back, according to Carfax. The average cost to those affected is about $4,000 in addition to higher taxes. It is enough of a problem that there is even a federal Office of Odometer Fraud Investigation at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administation (NHTSA) It is staffed by agents investigating these types of crimes. The department estimates that about 400,000 vehicles are sold each year with false odometer readings.

Why Election Officials Are Worried About Prediction Markets
Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Maricopa County, Arizona, have adopted policies addressing employee prediction market activity. Officials say the rules are meant to prevent financial conflicts, protect workers from allegations and reassure voters, not respond to evidence that election workers have used the markets. CNBC’s Ananya Chetia reports on how prediction markets are prompting new safeguards and raising questions about nonpublic information and voter trust.

Is there such a thing called a clerical error in milage reporting on titles? I say this because my bank had to request a duplicate title from the state, because they lost the origonal. However they reported the wrong milage on the car at the time.. More importantly they never called or asked me the milage at the time they had the title reproduced. Then I moved to a different state, then had the title transferred to the new state I moved to. When I reported the milage to the new state, the milage didn't match. However I was still able to get the title transferred and register in the new state.
I had also recently took my vehicle to the dealership to get work warranty work done, the service center and the manufacture say that the title is a salvaged title. Why because the Carfax report said so.
I have already talked to my states DMV office about my title, the state says the title is clean.
My question is how do I resolve this obvious clerical error. At the time of the title transfer the original duplicate title milage was 45000, the actual milage was 41000. Everyone I've asked so far says I need a salvaged title. However the state I transferred the title too says the title is clean.
I don't know what to do… Call a lawyer maybe? But what type of lawyer would specialize in vehicle title law?

The total lack of trust is frightening. If a dealership is caught doing anything like this, they should have their dealership taken away from them. Automakers should be doing more to prevent this, it's their future that is at stake. Amazon should not be selling tools to roll back your odometer. Shame on them. And the law that allows these things to be sold should be changed. Shame on everyone involved, there is a special place in Hell waiting for you!!

Just. Purchased a used truck and they are reporting changed the motor and the new motor has 140000 miles. Truck looks good until you look at the odometer. I would like to reset to the new motor.

Great informative video. I was looking at a vehicle where the last 2 year history had no maintenance records, while the first 2 buyers did. A mechanic told me that they can detect Odometer roll back by checking it with the cars computer where the real mileage is burned in. I don't know much so am wondering if the computer can be changed as well. He seemed to think it could not.

Blockchain can solve this. It's immutable. The mileage can only go up. And anyone smart enough to hack it would likely not bother with that kind of chump change cyber pirates can do from credit cards numbers alone. Let the billions in fraud be redirected to you by securing a vehicles value.

How can an Electronic odo be rolled back when the cluster is dumb (dumb being it does NOT contain the mileage), and the mileage is supplied to the cluster via the Body Control module? IT CAN'T. Most modern cars/PU trucks have used these dumb clusters for years. Now if telling me there is a way to roll the odo back on the BCM…in many cases I would agree, in many cases I would say BS.
@heisenfeis
December 31, 2023 at 11:18 pm
In my country Norway we have inspection every 2nd year and the mileage of the car is put into the computer which goes to the "Norwegian Public Roads Administration" and you can login to the site with your social security and check owners and mileage sometimes you get typos which should be of a less concern because you can read the history of mileage.
Usually older cars with 6 digit odometers or that go around at 100 000, have usually some funky reporting going on. However most new cars are accurate. Also when you type in and the computer detects a lower mileage than typed in you need to check it again or it can be reported as fraud, also you have to type in mileage 2 times before it registers as a valid input, like when you make a new password and it has to match.
In some rare cases where the engine is replaced and the engine module insists the mileage is lower than what the car body has traveled this has to be documented and sent in so people know the engine has been changed, this can be a hassle for most people changing the engines themselves but it can be achieved because of kinda strict rules regarding VIN number origin of the engine taken from another car, through this it is easier to report, since most salvage yards give you all the documents for the engine you got, you just have to fill it in and send it to the "NPRA" or "Statens Vegvesen" or have a certified shop do it for you.
However in the 1990s it was a joke here that all VW Golf 2 had always less than 200 000 km on them, mostly because of pulling the instrument cluster and using a sharp instrument like a nail to move the cogs/numbers.
