Inside Corning’s Gorilla Glass Factory
CNBC traveled to Harrodsburg, Kentucky to get a rare look inside Corning’s oldest glass factory where it makes Gorilla Glass for iPhones and a variety of other devices. The factory runs 24/7 and human hands never touch the glass — only air and robots. Take a look inside to see how it’s made.
In the middle of bluegrass and bourbon country in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, is Corning’s oldest glass factory. It was built in the 1950s to create lenses for glasses and then in the 1980s it transitioned into making LCD glass panels.
But about six months before the first iPhone was released in 2007, Steve Jobs made a call to the CEO of Corning and asked the company to create glass that could withstand scratches and breakage for a new Apple product. Before that, phones were typically covered in plastic. Corning quickly developed Gorilla Glass, and this factory went through a complete transformation.
The same company that developed the glass for the Edison bulb in 1879, is now making the glass that covers 6 billion smartphones, tablets, screens and wearables worldwide for Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony and Huawei and a variety of other manufacturers.

Thru my Samsung phone against a wall once, got mad at it… Lol. It ruined the screens picture had all kinds of lines in it but it never cracked the screen. Gorilla glass is tuff no doubt.

I've owned a Note II all the way to the Note 20 Ultra. I put my phone in my pocket and never once broken the screen or have a scratch on it. My Note 20 Ultra on thr other hand have a beast of a glass.

A great product. Every weekend when my Grandchildren have been over and used my tablet, after they have left it takes 20 or thirty seconds to clean the ice cream, backed bean, pizza and gravy residue off the screen and I whisper a little thank you to Corning.

I thought glass is made by combining different ratios of SUGAR and water or some other fluid, to dissolve the SUGAR in the fluid( or melt the SUGAR in the fluid); either hot or cold,or cool fluid, and then let the SUGAR and fluid mixture be shapen in or on a surface, to make any sorts of GLASS!….Is that not how to make metals too? mixing molten metal' with SUGAR and water or other fluid?

That's wonderful. But what about recycling this amazing product? The process of recycling Gorilla glass would have to be more exclusive and special since the glass would have been chemically altered through the ion exchange process for strengthening. This means that the chemical composition is different and the melting point will subsequently be different from regular glass. Hence, gorilla glass cannot be ideally recycled with regular glass. Now then, this sorting out process would also be expensive and chances are high that they can be mixed with regular glass which would ruin the whole process of recycling. However, gorilla glass recycling is still possible using conventional methods where the shredded glass cullet can be added back to the manufacture of new glass panels. However, only about 12 percent of mobile devices are actually recycled once their end-of-life approaches. These leaves a considerable amount of unrecycled glass that ends up in the landfills. With 8 billion devices worldwide and 88% of this material going to waste this is an alarming trend of planetary destruction. Maybe it's time we pass laws that require users to turn their cell phones into companies for a modest refund just like we used to do with beer bottles called deposit refunds. This would immediately remove these polluting devices from our trash stream.

I havent cracked a phone screen. I always buy those cheap rubber silicone-like cases from ebay for like $2. Best $2 I ever spent. Get the glass protector thats also made of glass or failing that, the flexible sticky ones. After 3 years of phone usage, you will have replaced cases and protectors but the phone still looks like new. My phone slipped out of my hand while getting out of my truck once and it landed face down on the tarmac. The only damage I had was the soft flexible glass protector was punctured and there were some tiny air bubbles in the film. Either I'm extremely lucky or these cheapo things do a reasonably decent job.

Só pode ser mentira que tinha gorila glass no iphone, porque foi sempre o celular mais fraco (até hoje) e sempre quebrava ao cair no chão.
