Why The EV Industry Faces A Global Nickel Shortage
As the EV industry ramps up, it could be hindered by a global shortage of nickel, a key component in most lithium-ion batteries. Tesla recently signed a deal to source nickel from a proposed mine in Minnesota, though mining raises a variety of environmental concerns that EV automakers must grapple with if they want to source battery minerals responsibly. Many also hope that battery recycling technology will scale up quickly enough to make a dent in the problem.

AI doomerism hit a fever pitch after former OpenAI and Anthropic researchers warned that AI could kill us, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk joined the cause. As runaway AI fears reached a crescendo, policymakers renewed calls for a magic stop button for AI or a kill switch, which would require model makers to build a capability to shut down access when an agents go awry. This is U.S. propaganda, first of all, "those" countries are emerging markets not developing. Second of all, they are not low-grade nickel, and they are currently the biggest source of nickel. Thirdly, the implication that refining the nickel domestically would have better environmental implications is incredibly misleading. The process will have damaging environmental implications no matter where it is conducted. Indonesia will proceed with developing its own EV industry, and countries like the U.S. and Canada will have to just accept that. I know Tesla has.

sorry i dont see whats wrong with refining nickel in canada? nafta provides no tarriff barriers to this and canadians demand lower wages than americans. this is a more efficient configuration than any othwr alternative.. we are trying to save money right?

Indonesia's nickel trade has been discriminated against for a long time, before we exported nickel worth 1'5 billion USD before it was deducted and the price jumped to 20'8 billion USD after the smelter was built and even then those who import from Indonesia still benefit a lot because it can still be processed there and the price will also increase. soared bigger than 20'8 billion USD and there are still many raw goods that we export very cheaply and then process them and the prices become extraordinarily expensive and we are like destroying nature in Indonesia to make other countries' nature green, this is really very very evil discrimination.
