Ruth Marcus: ‘Any reasonable person’ hearing SCOTUS ethics claims would say it ‘doesn’t look right’

Published

on

The Senate Judiciary committee is holding a hearing on considering strengthening ethics rules in the Supreme Court following revelations about Justices receiving all-expenses paid vacations and real estate deals. NBC News Washington Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor and Washington Post Associate Editor and columnist Ruth Marcus join Andrea Mitchell to weigh in. “I think any reasonable person reading the facts of the story involving Justice Thomas and Harlan Crow would stop and say, “Hey, what’s going on here? This just doesn’t look right,’” says Marcus. “We’re just not capable of looking at that without assigning political animus and political motivation. And look, I think that’s true on both sides.”

You focus on Clarence Thomas because that's what is on the piece of paper somebody hands to you puppets.

If Thomas had been appointed by a Dem, "Racism!" would be screamed from the rooftops. A pity no one is mentioning Sotomayor's paid trips courtesy of the ACLU, who are constantly before the Court.

Accountability is not the Supreme Court thing! They should follow rules just like anyone else? If I was wealthy and needed one id love to be able to afford one myself? Alas, I'm not so I will get along without one.

The honor system doesn't work with most of the SCOTUS, they have no honor as we now all know.

  15. @bil8647

    January 10, 2024 at 2:49 pm

Clarence Thomas is so deep in Crow's pocket he's playing pool. 69% (and growing) of the US population have lost faith in the SCOTUS. Ethics code with tangible penalties, term limits, and a whole new bench just might restore faith.

They are nominated to the court because it's a money maker. They are there supposedly because they are the best justices we have. Turns out they are votes for higher. If clarence and alito and gorsuch and kavenaugh and Roberts felt what they were doing was just fine, why all the lying when caught? And why did three of them lie to get on the court and there they are liars lying still on the court

This "degree of resentment" toward advocates who earn far greater salaries than the justices is BS. Justices earn a phenomenal salary, and earn the prestige that comes with serving on the highest court in the land; they can't eat prestige, but the 300k is nothing to sneeze at. That's the trade off they ageed to when they took the job.

Government employees within my profession have salary disparities even within the government. Some people don't or can't leave Arkansas or Nebraska and accept the lower wages. Some people work for more prestigious agencies in places with higher costs of living, yet pay their dues at a lower salary for a decade or more until a promotion lets them thrive. I didn't choose that route. I chose an agency where I earn twice what some very talented people make in similar ones. I have mixed feelings about this, but that doesn't mean I think those lower earners people are entitled to different ethical standards.

Current rules dictate how many partisan bumper stickers I can have if I happen to use a government-owned garage. It's one sticker, btw. But Clarence Thomas can accept hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts without even disclosing it?!

There's something wrong with the Supreme Court judges. They need to Dismantle the Supreme Court judges.

  22. @peterblock6964

The highest court in the land needs to be held to the highest ethical standards of ANY court in the land.
This fake "Honor System" nonsense must stop and real, legal accountability implemented immediately.

SCOTUS members who have been violating ethics (including justice roberts by his refusal to address the issue) have thoroughly earned the title "Dishonorable."

Mehdi: When Trump shows you who he is, believe him

Published

on

By

The White House and the Biden-Harris campaign are slamming Donald Trump over his remarks that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country,” with critics likening his words to the rhetoric of WWII Germany.
The #Biden campaign said #Trump “parroted Adolf Hitler” while praising other dictators. The White House said “Echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists… [is] the opposite of everything we stand for as Americans.” MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan argues Trump has long been showing us his fascist and dictatorial tendencies, and it’s time we believe him when he shows us that a second Trump presidency would mean “the end of American democracy.”
