They were trying to survive quickly when they saw that huge wave caused by the collapsed dam.

   Today 9/16/23, I heard ABC'S GMA refer to this disaster as Lybia's 9-11 !
   HOW DARE THEY!!! This is a natural disaster brought on by their own lack of maintaining the dams……NOT an act of terrorism against the peoples of another country. SHAME ABC!

   To put this flood's death toll into perspective, consider the Johnstown Flood in Pennsylvania on May 31, 1889. That flood's death toll was 2,208, a total dwarfed by the number of dead in this catastrophe (latest figure: 11,300+). The amount of water released in the torrents that tore through Johnstown and Derna were different, though. In Johnstown it was roughly 14,550,000 m³, whereas in Derna it was roughly 30,000,000 m³ (and in each case, those same figures represent the torrent's mass in metric tons, of course). So, the amount of water in the Libyan city was more than twice what swept through the town in Pennsylvania, but the outcome was well over twice as bad. Derna truly is a disaster that will not soon be forgotten. I hope that some good can come out of it — like perhaps more unity and stability in Libya. It could use some.

    lots of people live in cellars, which are bomb shelters to protect from planes bombing them, and also long-range artillery shelling, They won't know how many died in them until the water level drops, which should take long as floods happen and dry up in days here, the ground is so dry and porous, the question is why did the dam fail, shoddy workmanship maybe, sabotage ! construction standards here are not like in the USA & Europe and corruption is part of everyday life, Ali Akbar

God saw that human wickedness became so extensive that judgment was required, resulting in Noah's Flood (Genesis 6–8).

    Be prepared for many more disasters around the world. These things are starting to happen more frequently. Recent earthquakes have also killed thousands in different parts of the world. Largest wildfires in history have been reported this year.

    O believers! Do not waste your charity with reminders ˹of your generosity˺ or hurtful words, like those who donate their wealth just to show off and do not believe in Allah or the Last Day. Their example is that of a hard barren rock covered with a thin layer of soil hit by a strong rain—leaving it just a bare stone. Such people are unable to preserve the reward of their charity. Allah does not guide ˹such˺ disbelieving people.
