Venice is built on logs driven into mud and has been sinking for a long time. The Guardian is not somewhere I go for information but the did a good story on Venice floods. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/gallery/2015/jun/16/history-flooding-sinking-city-venice-in-pictures

    Harry Decker3 days ago
Just saw on the news that Venice has flooded, and it was blamed on "climate change." No other reason was suggested. So I looked up info on Venice (Italy) to discover that it consists of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. The whole area is located in a shallow lagoon and is slowly sinking by 1-2 mm annually. Six centuries ago all major rivers were diverted to keep them from flowing into the lagoon. A great deal of engineering took place to build Venice and to keep it from flooding, and engineering continues to this day. Venice is located next to the Adriatic Sea, and tides and sea levels naturally change over the centuries and millennia. Natural storms and floods will continue to occur and vary in intensity. Erosion and silt deposition is constant. The Eurasian plate is drifting eastward at a rate of 2.5 cm annually. We know that there are ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian seaports that are now underwater. Oh my gosh, it had to have been due to climate change! (It took me 15 minutes to look up this information. Why aren’t journalists doing this and giving the public the big picture? Could it be that agenda-driven politics is involved and therefore those who control the news attempt to brainwash the public?)

Sounds like a lot of corruption for the funds that should have been used in the City which is prone to flooding.
Same with other cities built on watery sites, but the political corruption has not been as flagrant as has been the case in Venice.

A good report – the 'Moses' barrier at the mouth of the lagoon was designed to prevent this kind of flooding happening, but it is still not functioning. It's a bit like when the Italians were trying to prevent the Leaning Tower of Pisa from collapsing. Architects, engineers and politicians-with-an-axe-to-grind argued for years about what to do – they got it right in the end. Hopefully it won't be too late for Venice . . .

Well, high tides are common in Venice, but those above 110cm were like 5 every ten years and now they are like 80 every ten year. Those have been increasing since the 60/70s when, as far as I know temperatures in the adriatic started to increase and thus winds. Global warming. Yeah, it is. But what about other coastal cities? You are not that far to become the next Venice

ER doctor reacts to Mitch McConnell ambulance video

Published

on

By

Emergency responders took Sen. Mitch McConnell to an ambulance on a stretcher after being called to his home last month for a report of an unconscious person, according to new video of the incident and an eyewitness account.

A neighbor of McConnell told CNN that they opened their door to find commotion outside their home at around 8:30 a.m. on June 14, with two ambulances, a fire truck and Capitol Police officers blocking the entire street.

The neighbor said they learned from another eyewitness who saw the individual’s face that the person on the stretcher was McConnell and he was not wearing an oxygen mask.

CNN’s Annie Grayer has the details, and emergency physician Dr. Megan Ranney describes what struck her about the newly released video. Also, CNN’s Audie Cornish looks at GOP lawmakers’ reactions to Sen. McConnell’s medical situation.
