Back in 2017, when Republicans held a large majority in the Senate, 61 senators from both parties agreed on the non-partisan resolution to keep the filibuster in place.

Now in 2021, the majority of Democrats are calling for the abolition of the filibuster using their typical platitudinal language; "racist", "jim crow law", "bigoted" etc. This is simply a short-sighted partisan effort to ram through some of the most radical legislation, such as HR1, on a party-line basis.

I actually have to praise Joe Biden for his impartiality on this issue. Ending this filibuster whilst they have a slim majority is a blatant attempt by Democrats to radically shift American politics quickly whilst they have a majority. The whole point of a filibuster is so that policies can't shift too left or right during a short space of time; it demands compromise so that half the country isn't disenfranchised.

    Keep the filibuster.
But lets change it to be real.
Right now, a Bill that needs 51 votes to pass, needs 60 votes (3/5th of the Senate) to stop the filibuster and allow the Bill to be voted on.

Revise the filibuster to require 40 votes to use the filibuster. If you cannot get 40 senator's on the record as wanting to continue discussing a Bill, then it gets voted on.

It's the same numbers. But now its about voting to continue discussing, and 2/5th of the Senators need to agree.

I'd also love to see it changed to the forty or more that vote to filibuster are REQUIRED to be in the chamber while the discussion of the bill is ongoing. They can take a break every hour. Then do another vote and if forty are still with it, they keep discussing.

Joe Biden, you have smart people working for you. Get that filibuster reformed.

Or the Trump loving RINO's will make you completely ineffective.

Honesty, Integrity, Morality, Empathy,, Civility….no of these. Be specific. There are none, period. Biden is an evil person and a corrupt, demented old man. MSNBC is only suppressing truth like the CCP in China. MSNBC hates America.

Joe says he doesn't want the Senate to be a "glorified version of the House with majoritarian rule," as if majority rule in a democracy, while giving the minority equal time to debate, were something bad. Joe gives no reason for what he wants or doesn't want, nor give any reason why we should agree with him. If it's not in the Constitution, and it isn't, as he points out, then what is the principle behind having it or not having it, since it is not stated in our founding documents? The real problem is that virtually no one in Congress can be won over by debate. They don't even listen to the debate. It doesn't make any difference if the minority has a good idea. In the case of Mitch McConnell, it doesn't even make a difference that the H of R has passed a bill and sent it to the Senate for consideration. He doesn't even respect the "other body". If our representatives were actually persuadable by the other side, you wouldn't need dilatory and obstructive action by the minority, because their input (assuming they have any to offer — obstructing for the sake of obstructing is not providing input or new ideas) would be regular and automatic. But the people have to want that and make it their #1 priority. It isn't now and wasn't even before the pandemic. Everyone seems to want gridlock until there's an emergency, so they can blame the other party for it and gain politically.

Somehow, MSNBC doesn't understand that they offend listeners more with the the machine gun delivery at the end of their pieces than without it. How long can this go on really. Saw Biden at a hardware store and he didn't answer one question. The sock puppet living in the White House has handlers that are absolutely terrified to let him answer questions. On top of that his dog just bit somebody. First Biden breaks his leg while supposedly playing with the dog now the dog bit somebody. What's his dog's name, CUJO? And think, the Fake News said ," There is nothing wrong with Biden's cognitive ability." Is there anyone out there who believes that?

That's because Joe was never in favor of raising the minimum wage. It's easy to claim that you're in favor of something, when you know that it will never actually pass into law. More of you should have voted for Bernie Sanders in the primaries… but you allowed yourselves to be convinced that Bernie was "too radical." Now, you're going to pay for it. Biden is useless.

  45. @CycloneGU

    January 22, 2024 at 8:29 am

Getting rid of the filibuster stops Republicans from stonewalling every piece of legislation they can create fears about. Removing it forces them to try to get their input in on it because it will pass anyway.

  46. @jonspitz8287

    January 22, 2024 at 8:29 am

Keeping the filibusterer is just Biden's excuse for getting nothing done. It's like he told his billionaire friends during his campaign, "Don't worry, nothing is going to change."

  47. @Paul-lm5gv

    January 22, 2024 at 8:29 am

The filibuster has worked for 240 years and forces compromise and puts the brakes on the tyranny of the majority! Do the Dems not regret Harry Reid ending the filibuster for federal judges? Trump/GOP used that to put 3 more conservatives on the Supreme Court and over 200 more judges on the district courts!

Trump suffers the consequences of poor staffing choices
