This is so real and honest. I’ve been sober for going on 2 years. It’s been the hardest and best thing I ever did. I too was a “functioning addict” no one knew. I hid it for 23 years!!! It was absolutely hell on earth. But the fear of the judgment as a human and a mom I couldn’t even imagine how I’d bear it. Then after all the years of the balancing act….I overdosed. I died….I was brought back by 5 narcans and cpr that broke my ribs. My entire family now knew as I was in the hospital. Within 24 hours every person in my life knew my secret opiate addiction. I finally was free to go get help I’ve wanted to badly for so long. And I was able to come to terms with the father who began my addiction as a child. I was secretly drugged for so many years. I was able to forgive myself and I’m so thankful for therapy! I didn’t even know the amount of trauma I was numbing……huge chunks of my past I’d “forgotten”…..it’s wild what our brains do to protect us until we are ready for it. 🖤

Addiction can lead anybody down a dark, winding path. I was the evening meteorologist at WSLS TV in Roanoke when I used opiates and eventually heroin to cope with my anxiety attacks, which were starting to happen on the air. At first, my superiors actually told me they could see a difference for the better, bc I was able to anchor my segments with more ease without sweating and becoming short of breath. But eventually my tolerance changed so much and I was having horrible withdrawals. Someone introduced me to heroin and it only took a few weeks for folks to notice something wasn't right. I eventually admitted everything to management and got help. That was in 2005. It wasn't easy. But everyday I'm so thankful that my work family and personal friends and family gave me their support. One day I'll tell my entire story… it was scary.

I guess I don’t understand alcoholism. Keep up the good work and dont let boredom take you down if boredom is causing the problem. Wine and alcohol does nothing for me. But it is still dangerous for others. I hope you defeat this addiction.
