And just six years later, he holds neither of these distinctions and one of them is held by a player not on the list.

I was trying to think the other day who is the best player I ever seen play live at a game and it was definitely Fedorov.

The most talented hockey player I ever seen. Not the best, but did more things at the elite levels on the ice than anyone else. Skate, Pass, Shoot AND Defend…

He could skate faster backwards than many players could skate forward.

Is it me or am I detecting a lot of salt in Shanny, Maltby, and Draper’s comments? They’re basically all saying Feds only showed up to play sometimes.

As a naive seven year old I saw him play for the Capitals on January 19, 2009 against the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum on Martin Luther King Day, three days after I turned seven. Alex Ovechkin scored both goals in a 2-1 overtime win for the Capitals. Federov had the secondary assist on Ovechkin’s OT winner.

Federov speaking in Russian :"It's OK, you no hold back to fit in with other players. It's OK you be better all of them – See, watch me – see how silly other team winger look thinking he still have puck? Now you show me what you do."
Datsyuk:"You say so Ok. Here what I do…"

He was the most talented Red Wing ever. He won the hardest shot contest AND and fastest skater contest in separate all star events. He was brilliant on defense too.

  39. @williamclark8864

    January 31, 2024 at 3:22 pm

Avs vs Wings in the 90s was Forsberg and Sakic vs Federov and Yzerman. Sheesh.

  40. @dross1412

    January 31, 2024 at 3:22 pm

he was my favourite player growing up. when I was 10 I named my goldfish Sergei.

  41. @ekim4363

    January 31, 2024 at 3:22 pm

Remember kids, in the 1989 draft, Detroit got Nick Lidstrom in the 3rd round and Sergei Fedorov in the 4th round. Today, Lidstrom would be a second round pick and Sergei would be a third round selectionz

In that same draft, Detroit had six players play in the NHL.

Sergei would dominate this era of the NHL, he played in the clutch and grab era.

  42. @The-Dom

    January 31, 2024 at 3:22 pm

    Better than McDavid.

  43. @RushAnthem69

    January 31, 2024 at 3:22 pm

Sergei shot himself in the foot leaving the Wings. Could have had himself at least 1 more ring and better stats. Arrogance and jealousy sadly drove him away. But you can tell by his Hall of Fame speech that he regretted his actions, and he was sorry. He cut the Illitch family deep leaving the Wings but hopefully one day he can have his number retired. They will probably make him wait until after Datsyuk and Zetterberg though.
