Makeshift aquarium in flooded Brooklyn sidewalk draws controversy
As several Brooklyn residents were lounging outside in the New York City heat last week, they stared at a sidewalk tree pit that’s often flooded by a leaky fire hydrant and came up with a strange idea: Let’s create a makeshift aquarium.
After fortifying the edges of the tree bed with rocks, they bought 100 goldfish from a pet store and dumped them inside the sidewalk aquarium that’s about two inches deep.
But as stories about the fish pit circulated online, the project began to draw concern from both city officials and now animal rights advocates.
