Trade talks between the US and Canada broke down at the last minute late last month, resulting in tariffs and an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. The breakdown was due to nobody on the American side being able to say who had the authority to make a deal stick, as officials pursued incompatible policies. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed Canada becoming the first associate member of the European Union. ”I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to being the first associate member of the European Union,” von der Leyen said during her state of the union address in Strasbourg, France, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance.
