Do you think she lived up to the hype? It’s hard to say–after all, everyone in fashion knows the name of Vionnet’s founder Madeleine Vionnet and after 100 years, while her status has lived on, the reputation of the label itself, has not. Ashkenazi seems to be making a good effort–capturing the essence of the label with the freedom that comes with lack of corsetry and the label was all asymmetrical cuts, black and white, monochromatic tones, draping, and little else.

Milan Men’s Fashion Week Fall 2011 on http://ftv.com fashiontv John Richmond Backstage

English-born designer John Richmond has, like America’s own John Varvatos, often designed with music in mind. But his latest collection, inspired in part by the Manchester post-punk scene of the early eighties, felt a step off the beat. Austerity versus luxury for “the modern machine age,” the notes had it: That amounted to baggy, boot-cut pants, shiny suiting, and cutout leathers, many accessorized with sparkling rhinestones, velvet, and—in line with a curious number of designers this week—dense patches of fur. There was more of a nineties brashness than an eighties edge, but either way, there wasn’t much that was fresh; a fair bit was downright tacky. Joy Division and Iggy Pop (“Nightclubbing”) banged on the soundtrack, but the best things here were the ones that felt farthest from the club. The handful of hooded, fur-lined parkas, for instance—the sort that are quickly beginning to emerge as a Fall ’11 staple.

John Richmond is an English fashion designer based in Milan, he was born in Manchester in 1960 [1] and moved to London, then eventually to Italy to pursue his dreams.

He graduated in fashion design from Kingston University in 1982, and straight away designed his own collection under his own name, while collaborating with such brands as Emporio Armani, Joseph Tricot and Fiorucci.

In 1984 he formed the The Richmond-Cornejo label with Ravensbourne graduate Maria Cornejo. Since 1987, Richmond has worked under his own name producing three lines, the main line: John Richmond, second line: Richmond X, and the denim line: Richmond Denim.

His close ties with the rock music fashion industry have led him to dress stars such as Madonna, George Michael, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox and alsoInternazionale/AC Milan footballers: Marco Materazzi, Clarence Seedorf.

He has collaborated with Iraqi fashion designer Reem Alasadi in London.

He has a daughter called Phoenix Richmond who is a new fashion model.
