Weird NHL Vol. 129: Refs Go Wild, Marchand Gets Mischievous, and 6-7 Creeps In!
Welcome to Weird NHL Vol. 129, where the refs show more personality than ever and the players deliver one unbelievable moment after another.
We kick things off with a trio of unforgettable referee calls — from “come on dude!” to Wes McCauley’s iconic “Five Minutes for Fighting!” to Kyle Raymond breaking out his “chuckin’ knucks!” announcement. Then we head to Vancouver, where the Canucks and Kings somehow produce three video reviews in the first FIVE minutes, leaving the broadcast crew stunned.
Brad Marchand tries infiltrating the Blue Jackets bench, “Fake Oettinger” returns with backup, and Brady Tkachuk shares the perfect moment with a fan. Linus Ullmark performs a desperation dive to save a near empty-net disaster, while Joel Hofer nearly scores a goalie goal of his own.
We’ve got the Predators winning a game with the net off its moorings, Kyle Palmieri delivering an all-time “how did he do that?!” assist while injured, and the Flyers attempting the most unnecessarily complex breakaway of the year. Spencer Knight has a puck stop just short of crossing the line, Mike Matheson suffers a brutal stick malfunction, and Jack Michaels battles through losing his voice like the legend he is.
Sergei Bobrovsky denies a Michigan try, Trevor Zegras and Michael Bunting continue the “made you flinch” craze, and Ilya Sorokin gifts the puck directly to the opposition. Former teammates Vincent Trocheck and Andrei Svechnikov hug it out, Florida wins 7–6 during the viral 6-7 weekend, and we get not one but TWO self-inflicted glove-goals from Mats Zuccarello and Erik Karlsson.
Oh — and that Karlsson own-goal happens on the first night in NHL history to feature FOUR game-tying goals in the final 15 seconds of regulation.
We wrap it up with the weirdest moment of the season: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen rejecting his pregame snack in a way no commentator can explain.
