How Anthropic Became The First U.S. Company To Be Designated As A Supply Chain Risk
The Pentagon has taken the unprecedented step of designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a label historically reserved for foreign adversaries. The move bans U.S. military use of Anthropic’s AI models and threatens its booming enterprise business, just as the $380 billion company eyes a public offering. CEO Dario Amodei says the company will challenge the Department of Defense in court, even as the U.S. military continues to use Anthropic’s AI tools in active operations against Iran. With both sides reportedly still negotiating, CNBC’s Kate Rooney explores how the outcome could redefine the relationship between Big Tech and the U.S. government for years to come.

AI doomerism hit a fever pitch after former OpenAI and Anthropic researchers warned that AI could kill us, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk joined the cause. As runaway AI fears reached a crescendo, policymakers renewed calls for a magic stop button for AI or a kill switch, which would require model makers to build a capability to shut down access when an agents go awry.
