Trump Makes New Demands on Iran, Oil Edges Higher | Horizons Middle East & Africa 8/11/2026

Published

on

Global markets remain under pressure as the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz deepens. President Trump has made sweeping new demands on Iran, including compensation for people he says Iran “killed and gravely wounded,” while hardened positions on both sides are dimming hopes for a deal to restore shipping through the vital waterway.
Oil has returned as a major driver of inflation concerns, with investors watching the impact on central banks. Bonds fell on renewed inflation worries, while Federal Reserve official Beth Hammack said “some number” of rate hikes may be needed. Australia’s central bank leaves rate unchanged at 4.35% while maintaining a hawkish stance.
Currency markets remain focused on the yen after its earlier intervention gains faded, raising questions over how effective further intervention could be. Japan’s growth strategy minister also discussed spending plans, fiscal policy and the potential long-term impact on the yen.
In technology, Nvidia is working with six firms to mobilize more than $500 billion for AI computing infrastructure, while Intel plans to sell $15 billion in stock as demand for AI-related technology grows. Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word AI manifesto, and RIOT signed a major $49.1 billion deal involving Anthropic.
Elsewhere, Gautam Adani won dismissal of US securities fraud charges, China imposed 54% tariffs on US pecans, gold climbed above $4,400 ahead of US inflation data, Tencent prepares to report earnings, and Unitree’s IPO retail tranche was subscribed more than 5,500 times.
We also cover Action Energy’s record $1.1 billion order backlog, Spinneys’ second-quarter results and the impact of regional tensions and higher freight costs on consumer demand. Guests includes Anita Krishna Gupta, Wealthbrix Capital Partners CIO,  Minoru Kiuchi, Japan Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy, Rawaf Bourisli, Action Energy Company Vice Chairman and Sunil Kumar, Spinneys CEO.

Oaktree Capital Management co-founder & co-chair Howard Marks says optimism has dominated markets since late 2022, pushing investors to look past bad news and making caution increasingly important. Marks is on Bloomberg This Weekend and tells David Gura and Christina Ruffini that enthusiasm around AI is undeniable but uncertainty over its profitability, valuations and potential impact on jobs makes it impossible to determine whether that exuberance is irrational.

CNN, MS NOW, Politico Sue Over Trump’s White House Ban

Published

on

CNN, MS Now and Politico filed a lawsuit seeking to allow their journalists to enter the White House grounds days after President Donald Trump revoked their access, turning to the courts in their fight over constitutional protections for the press. #trump #politics #news #usa #cnn #dc

The news outlets claim the ban is a “direct assault” on the First Amendment and “a blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles,” according to the complaint filed Monday in federal court in Washington.

“President Trump has said in no uncertain terms that he would prefer only to be covered by news organizations and reporters who praise his administration,” the outlets said. “But the Constitution does not allow a president or any other government official to deprive the press of their First Amendment rights and liberty and property interests with no notice or process based solely on his dislike of the content of their reporting.”

Trump Spurns Iran’s Latest Offer; Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek

Published

on

The selloff in the US bond market deepened on Monday after President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, dampening hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough to end the war. We get reaction from Bloomberg’s Ira Jersey. Iranian officials have privately expressed pessimism about reaching a deal to end hostilities with Washington and reopen the Strait of Hormuz before US midterm elections in November, according to people familiar with the matter. Iran and the US made little progress during talks in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last week and the Islamic Republic believes there’s a high chance of the conflict escalating after the November 3rd vote. We speak with former Under Secretary of the US Army, Patrick Murphy. Plus – former Disney CEO Bob Chapek joins for an extended conversation on his book ‘Behind the Castle Walls.’
