Technology Stocks Lift Equities, Mideast Peace Prospects Wane | The Opening Trade 8/17/2026

Published

on

Technology stocks lifted global equities after stellar revenue growth at Anthropic PBC bolstered the view that massive spending on artificial intelligence will be sustained.

Fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah flared in Lebanon over the weekend, the latest setback in efforts to end parallel wars in the Middle East that have dragged on for almost six months and disrupted global markets.

Israel’s military said Sunday that it killed Abu Hassan Alaa, a senior Hezbollah commander, in southern Lebanon a day earlier. Eleven people died in the Israeli strikes, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said were in retaliation for an attack by the militant group that seriously injured three soldiers.

The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. With analysis you won’t find anywhere else, we break down the biggest stories of the day and speak to top guests who have skin in the game. Hosted by Guy Johnson and Tom Mackenzie.

Higher Gas Costs Are ‘Busting’ Budgets: Moore

Published

on

Democratic Representative Gwen Moore of Wisconsin says higher gasoline prices are deepening Americans’ cost-of-living squeeze, pushing back on President Donald Trump’s comments that Americans should accept paying “a tiny bit more” at the pump because of the war with Iran. Rep. Moore says even modest increases are creating “chaos and hardship” for families. She also says Francesca Hong’s strong showing in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary demonstrated the resonance of her affordability message, while arguing Democrats shouldn’t be bullied by Republican efforts to characterize safety-net policies as communism. She speaks with Kailey Leinz and Joe Mathieu on the late edition of Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power.”

US Debt Costs Climb; Farage Wins UK Special Election | Daybreak Europe 8/14/2026

Published

on

Bloomberg Daybreak Europe is your essential morning viewing to stay ahead. Live from London, we set the agenda for your day, catching you up with overnight markets news from the US and Asia. And we’ll tell you what matters for investors in Europe, giving you insight before trading begins.

On today’s show, the US government sold 30-year bonds at the highest interest rate in a quarter century, as investors demand greater compensation to finance the nation’s growing deficit.

Bloomberg learns OpenAI is on track to generate annualized revenue of more than $40 billion based on its current performance, roughly doubling its run rate from the end of 2025 and bolstering the company’s plans for a Wall Street debut.

And Nigel Farage is returning to parliament after a comfortable election win over a satirical candidate dressed as a trash can, but the victory is unlikely to quiet questions about the Reform UK leader’s personal finances.
