A ‘MASSIVE CRISIS IS UNFOLDING’: The hidden family separations happening under Trump’s second term
A new investigation in The Atlantic found that the Trump administration’s rushed and relentless mass deportation purge is separating families again – this time in a different, more hidden, way. The first Trump administration’s family separations at the border were carried out under an explicit “Zero Tolerance” policy; now the administration is detaining and deporting parents already in the U.S. without giving parents the time or resources to make a plan for their children’s care. Families are living in a “climate of fear” and leaving their children with “nowhere to go.” Because of a legal gray area between immigration law and family law, some children left behind wind up with abusive caregivers and “there’s no process that exists to try to get kids in that scenario to a safe haven.”
