Mark Douglas, CEO of the ad tech company MNTN, discussed Meta’s reported ambitions to expand beyond advertising into cloud infrastructure. Global markets remain focused on escalating tensions in the Middle East as the US and Iran exchange another round of military strikes. The US military launched a new wave of attacks targeting Iranian positions, while Iran responded with drone strikes aimed at US military positions in Kuwait. Washington says the latest operations are intended to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while the IRGC claims it struck a US drone operations center at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. The renewed conflict has left energy markets on edge as uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz continues.
We also cover Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI alleging trade secret theft, Nippon Paint’s $8.6 billion bid for Akzo Nobel’s paint business, reports that SoftBank is considering a stake in Seven & i Holdings, and the death of former Qatari ruler Sheikh Hamad, which comes as Senator Lindsey Graham’s political future raises fresh questions over US Senate succession.
In Asia, South Korea’s KOSPI trading was briefly halted after falling 8%, with SK Hynix leading the decline. Elsewhere, venture capital funding across the Middle East and North Africa fell 22% year over year during the first half of 2026, the UAE’s oil production reached a record high in June, and Senegal’s infrastructure plans face setbacks amid a growing debt scandal. Zingales seems to believe that recession will do the job and reduce inflation anyway. WRONG. Unless monetary policy (via interest rates or more direct money supply measures) reduces liquidity, there will be inflation AND recession. Money supply expanded because of the huge debt.

Zingales forgets the four letter word DEBT. The Fed created inflation and now must combat it but the huge debt is here. Yes, banks cannot work with 4% rates which is still LOW and NEGATIVE in real terms. YES a bomb will explode and YES it must explode now unless we postpone it to explode later.

When a US politician talks about human rights or forester democracy aboard he means regime change, sanction, waging war, and/or selling arms at astronomical prices. Of course, McCarthy can meet with whoever he wants but the Chinese also have the liberty to dump US debts and de-dollarize its economy. Xi doesn't want to talk to Biden so why should he meet an ill-will opposition leader who only got the job after 25 voting rounds.
It is a good thing China is finally learning to fight back after being repeatedly punched in the face by the US, banning Tiktok, strangling Huawei 5G, Xinjiang products, general 25% tariffs, sanctions chips sales, 25 top Chinese tech firms, freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, install a large number of military bases covering the entire Chinese coastal line, putting Chinese scholars in jail for no reason.
