Let's not forget other artists are speaking out BECAUSE BTS picked away at the stigma of talking about mental health and other issues.
They have ALWAYS spoken on social justice issues (since 2013), emboldening other artists to do so.
The success of their company is due to this authenticity, and other labels are scrambling to replicate it.

Also, this isn't their first diplomatic event. They were at the UN three times before this, and were appointed as the South Korean presidential special envoy.

As for funding — yes, kpop is a huge money-making industry. But BTS were industry outsiders and their company almost went bankrupt.
I'd be careful promoting the idea that they were selected to infiltrate the minds of young people through some sort of massive government funding. There are already people out there who are starting to believe this after their White House appearance.

Much of the entertainment in South Korea was influenced by the necessity of entertaining US soldiers during the Korean War. Singers would take the requested US songs home and sing them for the others, then start to incorporate their language back into it. Korea's music scene developed in tandem with what was happening in the US — their own parallel path to creating music. The need to entertain those soldiers is what put the initial focus on this as a way to compete in the world at large.

Thank you for highlighting their contribution here. 🙂

one of the non-cringe videos giving coverage on this event or BTS in general. It's important to be aware of the history of korea, the industry's inception's purpose, and the unprecedented nature of the event, as well as the policy of non-pollitical idols and how BTS were the ones to be where they are. Equally as important you did not include talking about kpop (korean entertainment/performance force) as separate from these powers or anything inherently new about it or worse compare it as separate from western entertainment (and so giving historical and cultural context). You kept it factual and did not overstep knowledge bounds, but didn't delete any of the excitement that being a current fan of BTS entails. Bravo Yoonj and Zerlina.
*I am korean american, old enough to have seen changes in how koreans and kpop have been perceived in the US. I am wondering if Yoonj has additional insight by knowing korean language as well?

I couldn't have been more proud of these 7 young gentleman. Please give them the credit that they deserve in not only their creativity and strength as artists and young men, but as ambassadors of integrity, humility, acceptance and inclusion. 💜❤💙

Thank you for the story. BTS are great representation for South Korea. They are good, talented & humble men. That are filled with of goofiness, kindness & Joy. The only thing I disagreed with is; BTS has had their platform from the beginning. They have always stood up for representation & inclusion since back in the beginning.

This is a very good example of misrepresentation of BTS….to mention govt funding when Bighit had no such backing. To some agency perhaps could be said as true but for BTS from Bighit no.

OMG! Why totally wrong information here from this woman?? Korean culture and entertainment industry doesn’t have anything to do with Korean government’s policy or support whatsoever at all!
This theory is only famous that it’s made up by Chinese and Japanese people due to their jealousy abt Korean culture and Korean wave’s popularity throughout the world.

A lot of anti-Asian hate in S. Korea? Does the Biden administration think BTS fans are the ones attacking Asians? Reminds me of the time Obama invited that Afghan muslim pop band to the WH to speak out against attacks on the muslim community.

Thank you for this video, but I think there is a wrong emphasis that has been spreading regarding the origin of Korean pop cultural popularity. Yes, before President DJ Kim (who came to office after Asian Financial Crisis in late 1990s), entertainment industry was shunned and heavily censored. What he did was lift the censorship and allow creativity to take hold and laid out the ground work for it to be more competitive with foreign contents. That was the extent of government support. People make it sound like Korean entertainment industry was started and spearheaded by the Korean government. Korean government spent close to nothing compared to Japan Cool $1billion project which produced no result. The Korean government did create the Cultural ministry to support the infrastructure needs for entertainment industry to strive, but the popularity of Korean pop culture is all individual/industry effort. All this talk about Korean government masterminding the success is giving the government.waaaaay too much credit while diminishing the creative effort of individuals in the Korean entertainment industry.
