The Rise Of Dumb Phones

Published

on

Dumb phones, once considered outdated, are still prevalent around the world, making up about a quarter of mobile phones actively in use. While affordability in developing countries is a significant reason for their continued use, there could be an unexpected but potential rise in use among younger generations conscientious about the potential hard smart phones could have on mental health. While Nokia and Motorola are still some of the biggest dumb phone makers in the world, Punkt. and Light are two start-ups betting on the resurgence in popularity.

Or you could literally turn your phone into a dumb phone. It's smart enough to be even that.

Smartphones aren't really a phone anymore. We're brainwashed into believing we need and depending on a thousand dollar device. I just purchased the new zflip but im not planning to upgrade for another 10 years.

If I switch back to a dumb phone I’ll have to go back to credit cards and cash.
I am an American not in America. My bank account is in America. I can transfer cash to a mobile wallet app where I am, but not to a local bank account, because I don’t have one and can’t get one.
I would lose money from all the bank transfer and ATM withdrawal fees if I didn’t have a mobile wallet to use, not to mention getting shortchanged from vendors when I purely used cash.

I’ve started using apps to limit my screen time so now I’ve got it down to only being able to readily access things like messages, camera, notes, music, podcasts, books. The internet, emails and social media are all stuck behind walls- either requiring something I have to bypass or simply inaccessible during certain times of the day. It’s working really well for me so far. It’s all about intentional use and making sure it’s not a boredom thing, it’s time limited and only for uses that benefit you

  15. @AKayfabe

it wouldn’t mess me up because I use what I call qwertz keypad on my phone in the US which is just a German one. But not having apple music would mess me up. I primarily use my iPhone in public for music all the time, on airpods, like a really smart fancy walkman.

  19. @fleetfootedtexan

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

Just bought a new dumb phone that doesn't even include texting. It's great! No more texts! Have just had enough of being tracked, being texted, etc. No Google or Apple OS, too! Had hoped to go with the Light Phone but they all allow texts. You can turn off text notifications, but I wanted NO texts, period, not just turning off notifications. The phone I bought sends an autoreply via text telling texters that the phone does not text.

  22. @anolbe

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

I would call them "nostalgic phones" rather than dumb phones. I would love to go back to before the cell phones even, because everything changed for the worse the day "everyone" owned one. Just send me back to the 80/90's and it's okay if it's just a one way ticket 😅

  23. @kitcat2449

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

I'd buy a 'dumb phone' instantly if they supported spotify, but only a few of them have android and those phones aren't sold in my country.

  25. @FunGamingAntics

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

Being in my mid 30s i grew up with a "dumb phone" and hated using them, the texting was annoying and slow and you could hardly do anything else with it so i hardly bothered using it.

When i got the iPhone 3g in 2008 i started to love using it, i could access the internet whenever i wanted while out and about and loved all the different apps and games you could get. Even now i love being able to check things like banking almost instantly and access my home automation stuff all from one small device so could never go back to a "dumb phone".

  26. @Gator-357

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

The only reason I even have a smart phone is because I don't have a TV and I use my phone to watch videos. Other than that, text and phone calls is about all I use it for. I wish we would go back to phones wired to the wall in all actuality.

Intresting, if it was cheaper and had GPS would actually use.

  30. @Funkteon

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

Brands are going to love having the opportunity to charge people hundreds of dollars for a phone that cost less than $40 in plastic and early 2000s chipsets to put together.

  31. @Funkteon

    December 17, 2023 at 2:13 am

What people are forgetting is the fact that smartphones have provided the world with so much efficiency and freed up a LOT of human and vehicle traffic since their inception. You literally never hear of people getting lost when travelling to unfamiliar places anymore, and this has led to FAR fewer people finding themselves in dangerous situations, even though WAAAAY more people travel today than just 20 years ago…

as an american Gen Z while I'm very aware of this, I don't have a dumb phone yet I'm aware of my mental health and for the past year I've been spend more time thinking to myself, more time on my computer doing more research and watching things instead of mindlessly scrolling all the time on my smart phone while it's not much, I do little things here and their to try and improve it overall I think to be honest dumb phones are actually kinda cool in my opinion it's just something that you only need like messaging and such and not being online or staring at a screen all the time a phone is ment to be a communication device not a form of staring at it all the time. I've been interested in getting one myself tbh, I'm still always going to need a smart phone for online communication, news, personal research, watching YT to learn new things etc, or managing stuff and certain things like helping to manage a community on disc'ord but I'm glad I could could one day that at some point I'll get a dumb phone I really need to do a dopamine detox really bad and haven't tried or done it in many many years! It's something I need badly to stop trying to please myself and my brains reward system if I wanna move onto my next phase of better habits. I'm always trying to be aware that the world isn't as angry and as bad as social media makes it out to be while it's still bad, it doesn't mean people aren't trying to solve these problems.
This is why Vids like these that show people are making changes gives me hope and that we Gen Z aren't as hopeless and as dumb or such as people often underestimate or think we are so utterly bad like in a way we are stupid and don't know this kind of thing to be while that is true, not all of us are like that and many like me are aware the media who talk about the horrible things about gen z make it look like it's worse than it actually is but doesn't mean it's still bad I mean we still are the poorest generation and such etc. I'm aware of that and people like me are still having that battle everyday.

My big reason for sticking with a 'dumb' phone is size, the thing fits comfortably in my pocket. I had a 'smartphone' for a month and got rid of it, just too clunky.
The new Motorola folding phone has had me tempted though 🙂

Yaw are still spolied. The real dumb phone is a pay phone. Miss those days when all you had to do is put a quarter in to make a call. Now you got to start out with 30.00 dollars or more to make calls. Which i over pay because im lucky if i make 1 call each 30.00 payment just to keep my phone service. What a scam.

  41. @handle_of_ap

$380 dollars for a dumbphone is crazy. You can get a Nokia with the same features for $50-$100

I could not go bk to dumb phones. I rely on Siri to read and write for me when they r long articles or text messages for an example. I also rely on maps when out in my own.

It hearts if someone calls these Dumb phones 😢, these aren’t, these are the things from our childhood which made us mesmerised its like a wonder to talk over loudspeakers of phone, the idea of carrying it anywhere was alien, these feelings now dumb to some Youtubers but for us it was a cutting edge technology at the time and is still for us, no matter what so called smart phones are capable of.

AI’s Next Race: Cost, Control, and Compute

Published

on

By

The AI race is shifting from who has the biggest model to who can run, control and deploy AI most effectively.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas joins to discuss the company’s new orchestrator model, why he’s building on open-source Chinese AI, and his argument that “token value per watt” may decide the next phase of competition.

Then, Benchmark general partner Peter Fenton and Ollama CEO Jeff Morgan discuss the rise of open models, why enterprises are increasingly running models they can download and control, and what Ollama’s growth says about where the AI ecosystem is heading.

Together, the conversations get at one big question: in AI’s next race, will the winners be defined less by model access and more by cost, control and compute?
