How The U.S. Lost Thousands Of High-Skilled Workers To Canada
On July 16, 2023 Canada opened visa applications for a pilot program that would allow up to 10,000 H-1B visa holders in the United States to apply for a three year open-work permit in Canada. H-1B holders are highly educated and specialized foreign workers that work in fields such as tech.
After massive layoffs in the tech industry, this was a lifeline for H-1B holders who needed to find a new job or face deportation. The program was an instant success reaching its full capacity on the first day.
Since then, the Canadian government says more than 6,000 high-skilled U.S. foreign workers have arrived in Canada. CNBC spoke with several foreign tech workers and immigration consultants to uncover the story of how the U.S.’s bureaucratic visa process pushed thousands of high-skilled workers north.

AI’s Next Race: Cost, Control, and Compute
The AI race is shifting from who has the biggest model to who can run, control and deploy AI most effectively.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas joins to discuss the company’s new orchestrator model, why he’s building on open-source Chinese AI, and his argument that “token value per watt” may decide the next phase of competition.
Then, Benchmark general partner Peter Fenton and Ollama CEO Jeff Morgan discuss the rise of open models, why enterprises are increasingly running models they can download and control, and what Ollama’s growth says about where the AI ecosystem is heading.
Together, the conversations get at one big question: in AI’s next race, will the winners be defined less by model access and more by cost, control and compute?

How Warsh’s Task Forces Will Reshape The Federal Reserve
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is floating major revisions to the central bank’s approach to assets, productivity, data, inflation and public communications. To achieve this, Warsh has created 5 “task forces” while soliciting interest from individuals outside of the Fed. This presents an opportunity for a small unelected group to influence the broader U.S. economy and value of U.S. dollars circulating globally. CNBC’s Matt Peterson reports.

Why isn't anyone addressing the elephant in the room? Indians know that they pile on lies upon lies in everything they do. Fake 20000 rupees PHD degrees, fake experience on resumes, they know that this is how they do things in India. After the recent mass layoffs, we now know they were only hired to lower salaries, not actually do any REAL work.

I am a full stack engineer with 6+ years of experience and I can neither get into the US nor Canada. Personally, I prefer Canada to US, it is more calm, the US has a harsh vibe to it, many things going on at once. I prioritise productivity over renumeration in the grand scheme of things and this can only be achieved with peace of mind.

This video is complete disinformation. As a software engineer in Canada, I can attest you will be significantly underpaid compared to jobs in the US, and there's a shortage of tech jobs so you'll be among thousands of applicants per job. The cost of living is abysmal. If you are in healthcare it's a different story.

the key is not about those company cant find americans doing jobs, but they want cheaper ones with lower costs. aftermath will be the crazy waves of outsourcing. what the country really needs are artists, chefs, hair stylists…who cant do jobs remotely, but in person. also america lacks huge of graduates from those fields.
@martyzeenyc1210

I graduated from two top 30 American institutions with BS and MS in business & data science. However, since graduation in May, I have not been able to find an employer willing to sponsor me an H-1B Visa even though I have had more than 10 interviews. The common concern amongst them was my foreign citizenship and the need for Visa sponsorship. Many small or medium size firms don't have the capacity to pay immigration lawyers thousands to hire one person. I have always wanted to work and live in the US and I am more than willing to pay high tax for the possibility of becoming a citizen one day. My only other alternative seems to be EB-5 which will require up to 5 years of processing time and around USD$1M investment… I hope the next administration makes it more possible for us international students to find work and home in the USA.

US has arguably the most difficult and cumbersome visa process in the world. Any skilled worker who works in Canada can get his PR within 8 months, whereas in the US it takes 10-12 years, if applied in EB2 category. Applying in EB1 category needs approvals from the employer, which again curtails the freedom of individuals and puts them at the mercy of their employer, though the applicant is fully qualified. Stamping of visa is another Herculean task, with months of waiting time in US consulates in countries like India.

December 17, 2023 at 4:16 am
As usual the USA is screwing themselves up with their leftie "diversity" policies. But tbh Canada cannot even be compared with the US for a long term career/earning potential and economic prosperity for individuals. As soon as they receive their PR, you can see most of them go back to the States.

One of the ridiculous things in US green card application is that if you fail to submit 485 in one year after your priority date becomes current, you can't apply for h1b extension anymore. That is why I have to be forced out of USA to Canada.
