I know. Derechos are always compared to Tornadoes. But i Think Derechos are actually similar to Hurricanes in terms of Conditions associated with this type of storm and also their Duration: Hours or sometimes these things can go on for days which is Strange.

here in iowa, we call this straight line winds. never heard of a derecho before. interesting. pretty much the same thing as a derecho, but with straight line winds, you get funnel clouds and tornados.

That's not a derecho. It's a severe squall line

It's not called a Duh-ray-chi-oh… it is called a derecho..Deh-Reh-Cho. It is spanish and it means literally; straight. As in the manner in which the front is formed and travels, straight through…hence the name DERECHO. So glad I got that off my chest.

I follow the weather im a spotter so I know my stuff look at that link that shows you how common they are.

the point is, she should have done her research on derechos before assuming they were uncommon. Maybe for here area they were, but to just say "derechos are uncommon" on a well watched news channel like CNN gives the public a false sense of security that could prove dangerous.

I think once every four years is a little to low of an estimate. Four of them occured in july 1995 alone. Then of course we have the chicago derecho of august 4, 2008. We also had the so called super derecho or inland hurricane of 2009. Then we had at6 least one this year and last year. That alone accounts for over 32 years of history, and yet the oldest one I mentioned happened a little over 17 years ago. And there are several I did not mention in this comment which happened recently too

If you look at the radar you would see the storm kind of weaken when it moved over parts of WV, and Western Maryland.
