Iran War: Bessent Sanctions Plan Threatens US-China Tensions | Daybreak Europe 8/25/2026
Bloomberg Daybreak Europe is your essential morning viewing to stay ahead. Live from London, we set the agenda for your day, catching you up with overnight markets news from the US and Asia. And we’ll tell you what matters for investors in Europe, giving you insight before trading begins.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s threat to unleash an “economic D-Day” against Iran risks setting the US on a collision course with China, its main trading partner. Bessent promised an “economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe” as President Donald Trump tries to wind down his unpopular war in the Middle East.
US stock-index futures gained as pressure on technology shares eased, signaling tentative optimism ahead of key earnings this week that will test confidence in the artificial intelligence trade. Bitcoin advanced to a three-month high.
And Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume prepared to confront workers over his plans to radically shrink the carmaker, a test of his ability to push through sweeping changes at speed.

Putin Moves to Escalate War in Ukraine, Nvidia Fuels Faith in AI Boom | Opening Trade 8/27/2026
Russia is preparing to escalate attacks on Ukraine after concluding that negotiations for a peace deal have reached a dead end, according to three people close to the Kremlin.
For now, Russia is weighing an intensification of powerful conventional ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv, including the center of the capital, and infrastructure targets in other Ukrainian cities, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is sensitive.
Nvidia, the chipmaker at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom, gave a bullish sales outlook for fiscal 2028, easing concerns that AI spending is poised to lose momentum.

Well Mr.Dudley I challenge you to this. Let the fed stop all buying. And let’s see if the S&P only pulls back 3 bps… this is my official challenge

Traders should take the FED to court in a class action for deliberately distorting the free markets – these actions denied short sellers their profits – it also destroyed legitimate price discovery and both fundamental and technical analysis have been made irrelevant. This is bad not just for short sellers but the whole US economy – because the FED created zombie companies that will infect the whole economy and eventually bring it down.

The reserves aren't "leaking out" and creating demands for the stock market says Dudley. He's right they're not leaking out they are flowing out in risk assets by the banks themselves, trading risk assets as well as to hedge funds and private equity funds. Powell has stated directly that he is considering adding the 2nd tier / hedge funds to the table for overnight and short term / 30 day lending.

Bill Dudley and everyone else just like him, paid spokesperson with something to gain for floating the largest financial deception in the history of the US. $94 billion repo op today, February 4, 2020, with an immediately coincidental 500 point pop in the DJIA. Everything is up, even the dogs are up today. See for yourself….at least the FED is (honest/stupid/foolish, forthcoming) enough to provide data regarding their juice. https://apps.newyorkfed.org/markets/autorates/tomo-results-display?SHOWMORE=TRUE&startDate=01/01/2000&enddate=01/01/2000

What a shill. No surprise he is from the same pony university as Ben Moron Bernanke, the architect of the current mess. These people are absolutely clueless. They remind me of the Iraqi defence minister in the first Gulf war who stood there saying everything was fine and Iraq was winning, despite viewers practically seeing american tanks approaching in the background. Wizard of Oz jokers.

Why don’t banks have reserves & need liquidity from the fed if the economy is SOO great!?!?
It’s either they are broke or using fed liquidity to boost risk investing

"earnings are rising" LOLOL, maybe on a per share basis, net corporate profits have been flat since 2012
@Dustinisnotavailable
December 25, 2023 at 4:49 am
Maybe I'm missing something here, but overnight borrowing absolutely affects the money supply, as long as the fed continues to do this in the repo market. The only reason the banks need this money is to meet requirements on overnight balances on hand. If the fed is supplying 70% of this then that 70% is now free to be lent out by banks during the day because they know they will have the support of the fed overnight.
@AlexYounger
December 25, 2023 at 4:49 am
Nope. Take a look at a graph of the Fed’s expanding balance sheet layered over a graph of the S&P’s growth.

Interesting the comments on this page reflect my own impressions while I was watching the video. Half way through, I couldn't help but wonder what people were writing in the Comments section! This guy is so full of nonsense it baffles me. One need only look at the stock market every time they stop the repo injections to see this man doesn't know of what he speaks. Astounding. I suppose once he's done with this interview, he'll go back to his job as a spokesperson for the tobacco industry, lauding its health benefits and dismissing those silly rumors about lung related ailments. The good news, of course, is if they truly stop the repos in April, you know when to buy puts on the S&Ps.
