Nicolle and Aaron Sorkin: This is Trump’s ‘ultimate mind f***’
Aaron Sorkin wasn’t planning to make another movie about Facebook — until he met a whistleblower whose story he felt compelled to tell. In an expansive conversation with Nicolle Wallace, the Oscar- and Emmy-winning writer and director discusses his new film, The Social Reckoning, and the extraordinary power Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook wield over nearly 3 billion people — and the costly decisions that have shaped the platform’s impact on our lives, our politics and our democracy.
A follow-up to 2010’s The Social Network, Sorkin’s new film examines Facebook in the age of Trump, telling the story of whistleblower Frances Haugen’s decision to expose internal documents detailing misinformation and potential harms, while exploring an older Zuckerberg confronting the consequences of the technology he created. Sorkin explains why he chose to release the film ahead of the midterm elections and why he believes there is still room for optimism — if we are willing to act.
Wallace and Sorkin explore Zuckerberg’s immense influence, the decisions surrounding Facebook on January 6, the people inside the company who knew what was happening and remained silent, and why Wallace sees Zuckerberg as “bubble wrapped from reality.” They discuss the complicated empathy the film invites audiences to feel for Zuckerberg — and how that empathy can coexist with accountability for decisions that affect billions. Sorkin also shares the story of Zuckerberg’s former consigliere and their falling out, his reaction to Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Zuckerberg (whom Sorkin calls “the best American actor under 50 years old”), and Facebook’s efforts to obtain the film’s script before its release. He reveals how the filmmakers prepared for potential legal challenges, including the threat of a lawsuit.
The conversation also examines Trump’s relationship with Zuckerberg, the former president’s attacks on the media despite his apparent appetite for attention from credible news organizations, and the essential role investigative journalism plays in holding powerful people and institutions accountable. Wallace and Sorkin discuss why Congress and the law continue to lag behind rapidly advancing technology, the consequences of leaving that power unchecked, and why the stakes for democracy could hardly be higher.
And in a moment that connects Sorkin’s celebrated work across generations, the conversation turns to A Few Good Men, Hegseth’s “illegal order” and the enduring importance of questioning authority. Wallace, who was inspired by Allison Janney’s portrayal of White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on The West Wing to imagine a future for herself in the White House, joins Sorkin in reflecting on the responsibilities of the press, the dangers of unchecked power and the choices that define our political moment.
From Facebook’s influence over billions of lives to Trump, whistleblowers, investigative journalism and the future of American democracy, Sorkin’s message is clear: We need to take democracy more seriously.

George Conway: ‘Lying, intimidating, bullying. That’s Trump at his worst, and that’s Trump always’

@HelgeKS

Agree with Rory Stewart, common sense politicians should stand up to the populists – so why did he himself succumb to the populusists by quitting politics all together?
@RichestTea
December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
Cameron voted for the biggest change in the post-war British economy, based on the need to act tough… after a moderately poor showing in the 2015 county council elections.

My God we populists see the insane policies the Democrats have brought in, destroying America. Lies! Joe Biden and that bloody laptop…..the man has committed serious crimes. I certainly knew about it in 2019, but he is protected whilst Trumpnus maliciously pursued. Lies! All the political censorship Democrats imposed on social media on many issues. It has been dystopian. I am shocked with you Rory

December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
The evidence from experts suggests Rory is wrong. The older and higher the income the person the more likely they supported Donald Trump & Boris Johnson. It's not the economy, it's a growing gap between cultural progressives and conservatives. Younger people are more likely to support freedom of the individual, they see anti immigration and anti lgbt as too much control.
@AB-zl4nh

Major mistakes. The European Union (EU) is more like the early United States than a simple trade deal like NAFTA. The EU has evolved into a union of nation states similar to how the United States started as a group of individual states. It goes beyond trade, moving towards a political and economic union, including shared currency (the Euro), parliament and common policies on trade, business & agriculture. So, think of the EU as a closer parallel to the very early United States, where independent states came together to form a larger, united entity.

December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
I, for one, cannot understand why anyone actually doesn't want to act moderately. What an extremists mind is made up of is beyond me and that's probably why the centre gets laid into by the political extremes. It seems to me that, to the extremes, we seem linguistically weak because we're not roaring and raving and frothing at the mouth. We don't batter and bite people into submission like ravenous wolves. The only liberal that I know who would raise his voice to a holler was a member of a print union. Maybe his lungs got extra exercise shouting over the presses?
@josefschiltz2192
December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
I suspect that being a politician, especially one that is more-or-less centrist or has the sensibilities of a traditional centrist, is going to feel like he is trying to rein in a team of wild slavering mad horses that are all pulling in opposite directions. You either let go of the reins and go and sit somewhere where you can catch your breath, clam down and try and make sense of it all, or you stand your ground and get ripped apart. Will the human race learn and calm themselves? I lend my voice of doubt and say not to hold your breath, Rory.

It makes me laugh that the same people who bleat on about "protecting democracy" have spent the better part of the last eight years attempting to undermine and undo the one pure act of direct democracy in recent times, The Brexit Referendum.

Rory describes himself as a moderate but admits he ‘hates populists’ I find his ideas very interesting and insightful and will probably buy his book. Rory was major player in a government who nearly lost power to a hard left corbyn government, hopefully he has something to say about this episode in his book.

December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
I read his earlier book, "The Places In Between", about his solo walk across Afghanistan in 2002. He's something of a latter-day T.E. Lawrence, having had an academic, military & diplomatic career, so he's not merely a (former) politician, but actually a sincere human-being, which may sound silly, but it's sadly uncommon these days.
@TM-yr3pc
December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
He has a good pitch but he is at his core quite similar to Cameron – another bell curve, weather vane politician trying to reinvent himself by claiming authenticity. It is his so called moderates that set the conditions for brexit through the capitulations at maastrict and beyond..that is where real responsibility lies for the mess we are in. If you choose the wrong future the country ultimately pays.
@bisratezra8247
December 27, 2023 at 6:27 pm
I keep asking myself what is so special with Rory Stewart (as a politician). I think he answered that question in this interview by describing politicians in general as abnormal. What makes R. S. stand out in this context is this common sense.
@yvonneparmenter9251

Do America s know that being in the EU meant that the U.K. had no control over borders? For example if a Syrian enters Germany, they automatically got permission to enter the U.K.? Would it be OK for people who got permission to enter Mexico, to automatically enter America? Yes we needed to leave the E U but we need two things, our sovereignty and we need a decent government. We presently only have the first.
